Vinyl shutters are a practical window solution that works best in high-moisture areas like the bathroom and kitchen. Extremely durable, the shutters will not warp when in contact with water and steam.
However, daily exposure to moisture mixed with everyday dust can make shutters look dull, so it is important to give them a regular wipe down. If you’re unsure about cleaning your shutters and the best technique, we have provided some helpful information below and a step-by-step guide on how to clean shutters.
What will I need to clean my vinyl shutters?
For the best results, we advise a microfibre cloth or duster, toothbrush and a damp cloth to ensure your shutters look fresh and clean. If you have full height shutters, or tier on tier shutters, you may need a chair or ladder to help you reach the top of your shutters.
Compared to curtains and blinds, vinyl shutters are the easiest window dressing to keep clean. No trip to the dry cleaners needed here!
Do I need to buy a cleaning solution?
There is no need to buy any additional cleaning solutions when keeping your plantations pristine! Dampening a cloth with water will prove to be perfectly effective when cleaning vinyl shutters. In fact, we would recommend against abrasive cleaning products like bleach when trying to clean interior shutters, as this may affect the quality of their finish.
How to clean shutters…
First, you will need to remove any excess dirt. The best way to do this is to use a dry microfibre cloth or duster (no polish) and run it along both sides of the slats. Some people prefer to simply use a hoover to get rid of the excess dirt on their shutters. If you wish to, we would recommend fitting a soft brush nozzle to your hoover attachment, so you’re less at risk of scrapes and scratches.
Next, you may want to get a toothbrush and clean any hard to access areas e.g. joints where dirt can gather. Once any dust and dirt has been removed, get a clean cloth and dampen it slightly with water and wipe down the louvres and frame. The damp cloth will efficiently get rid of any remaining dirt.
And ta-dah! It’s that simple! You’ll be amazed how easy it is to keep your shutters looking as pristine as the day you brought them.
How often do I need to clean interior shutters?
We recommend that you give your plantation shutters a clean once a week to prevent dirt from building up. And don’t forget that bottle of touch up paint that we provide with every order! Perfect for touching up any small stains or slight scratches your shutters may endure over the years.
If you follow this guide, we guarantee your shutters will look like new for years to come.
