Wood shutters, in solid American poplar

Real wood interior shutters, made to the measurements you take. One wood, a hardwood, painted in any colour or stained. Nothing hollow, nothing foam-filled.
Level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 1, 3½-inch louvers, tilting open and closed.

What “wood shutters” should mean

Search for wood shutters and you’ll see vinyl, PVC, “faux wood”, “poly” and composite shutters sold alongside real wood, often under the same product name. Some are hollow plastic; some are a fibreboard core under a vinyl skin.

We make one thing: shutters from American poplar. It’s the wood traditionally used for painted moulding, trim and interior doors, because paint goes on smooth and stays. Why we chose poplar

The wood

American poplar

Every Shutter Boys shutter is made from premium American poplar, a hardwood, painted or stained.

Every room. In bathrooms and laundry rooms, run the fan so steam doesn’t sit behind closed louvers.

What a wood shutter costs

A 36 × 48 in window in poplar with flat moulding, paint stage 1 and 3½ in louvers: $320 – $400 ($460 – $570 CAD).

A 72 × 60 in living room window built the same way: $810 – $990 ($1,160 – $1,420 CAD).

US dollars, with Canadian dollars in brackets, before tax and shipping. Moulding, finish, louver size and colour change the price; the designer shows it as you choose.

Price ranges for every size

Painted or stained

Paint covers poplar evenly. A stain shows the wood’s natural colour range, so no two louvers look quite the same. For a specific colour, name the paint or stain in the designer and we match it.

Questions about wood shutters

Are your shutters solid wood?

Yes. Every Shutter Boys shutter is made from American poplar, a hardwood. We don’t make vinyl, PVC, composite or faux wood shutters, so there’s no cheaper line hiding behind the same name.

Will wood shutters warp?

Wood takes on and gives off moisture with the seasons, and paint slows that down without stopping it. Kept indoors and out of direct water, painted poplar moves a little and settles. Keep wood out of shower spray, where no wood shutter belongs.

Can I stain them instead of painting?

Yes. Poplar ranges from creamy white to greenish within one board, so a stain shows natural variation from louver to louver. If you want one even colour, choose paint or a colour match.

Are wood shutters better than vinyl?

For most rooms, yes: wood can be sanded to fit and repainted later, and it comes in any colour. Vinyl wins in one place: windows that get wet, like a window inside a shower.
