Hunter Douglas shutters: Heritance vs NewStyle vs Palm Beach, cost and warranty

The three Hunter Douglas shutter lines in their own words, how you buy them, the warranty, and where a DIY wood shutter fits.
Level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 1, 3½-inch louvers, tilting open and closed.

Updated

The short version: Hunter Douglas sells three shutter lines in three materials, through dealers who measure and install. We make one shutter, in solid American poplar, to measurements you take, priced online and fitted by you. Shutter Boys has no connection with Hunter Douglas; everything below about its shutters comes from its own pages, re-checked on October 30, 2026.

The three Hunter Douglas shutter lines

  • Heritance is the wood line: “Crafted from 100% natural hardwood”, with “Truemill® dovetail construction” and an “Integra™ Finish”, and custom paints and stains as an option[2]. The shutters page counts more than 20 colour choices plus custom colours[1].
  • NewStyle is a hybrid: “The rich look of hardwood, with added strength”, combining “the look of genuine wood with the durability of composite materials”, with a low-luster “Finetech®” finish[3]. The shutters page lists 8 colour choices[1].
  • Palm Beach Polysatin is the vinyl line, “Designed to stand up to intense sunlight and moisture”, in 3 colours[1]. Its stiles, louvers and T-posts “are reinforced with aluminum and molded resin blocks”, and Hunter Douglas says Palm Beach shutters “are not recommended for skylight applications”[4].

Sizes and options

Heritance and NewStyle both list louvers of 2½, 3½ or 4½ in, and an optional one-touch closure, “SoftClose™ Louvers with Quick Align™”[2][3]. Palm Beach comes in the same three louver sizes, with panels up to 120 in high on standard hinged and track installs, up to 36 in wide for individually hinged panels and up to 24 in for bi-folds[4]. Across the range, Hunter Douglas offers shapes for “arches, patio doors and French doors”, and PowerView motorization on Palm Beach only[1].

Our own options are on one material: 2½, 3½ or 4½ in louvers, three moulding levels, three paint stages, hidden tilt, arches and other shapes, and any paint or stain colour matched. Motorized shutters are in development and not on sale yet.

How buying works

Hunter Douglas sells through authorized dealers. Its Canadian site says its products are “professionally installed by authorized dealers”, with a free, no-obligation consultation with a local expert[5]. The Canadian Heritance page lays out the steps[6]:

  1. Request a consultation; Hunter Douglas matches you with a local expert for an in-person meeting.
  2. The expert measures and gives you a quote.
  3. The expert handles the installation.

Buying from us has four steps, all on your schedule:

  1. Measure each window with our measuring guide: five measurements per window.
  2. Add each window in the designer and see its price as you go; book a free video or phone design call if you want one.
  3. Order; we make each shutter to your sizes and ship it.
  4. Fit them yourself with our install guide, or hire a local installer.

The real difference isn’t the shutter so much as who does the work. A dealer visit, measuring and installation are part of what you pay for with Hunter Douglas. With ours, you measure and fit, and you see the price first: a 36 × 48 in window in poplar with flat moulding and 3½ in louvers is $320 – $400 in the US ($460 – $570 CAD in Canada), before tax and shipping.

What our prices look like beside a quote

Hunter Douglas doesn’t publish shutter prices. Its Canadian Heritance page says pricing depends on the window size, the type of treatment, the material, the control option and any optional enhancements[6]. So the fair comparison is your dealer’s quote, window by window, against ours for the same sizes. Here are three common sizes in our basic build (flat moulding, paint stage 1, 3½ in louvers), before tax and shipping:

Shutter Boys prices for three window sizes, from our live price list
WindowUS dollarsCanadian dollars
24 × 36 in$160 – $200$230 – $290 CAD

48 × 60 in$540 – $660$770 – $950 CAD

Prices for every size

Comparing quotes fairly

When you have a dealer quote and a DIY price side by side, check these before deciding:

  • Same material. A Heritance quote is hardwood; NewStyle is composite; Palm Beach is vinyl. Compare wood with wood.
  • Same louver size and frame. A 4½ in louver and a 2½ in louver are different products. Ask for the louver size, frame type and divider rails on every line of the quote.
  • Per window, not per room. Ask for each window priced on its own, so you can check them against our designer.
  • What installation includes. With a dealer, measuring and fitting are in the price. With DIY, they’re your time, or an installer’s fee.
  • Tax, delivery and colour. Our prices are before tax and shipping, and a colour match costs extra. Ask whether the dealer quote includes everything.

Questions to ask a dealer

These are our suggestions, not Hunter Douglas’s; the answers decide whether two quotes are comparable.

  • Which line is each window quoted in: Heritance, NewStyle or Palm Beach?
  • What louver size, frame and divider rail is each window, and is the tilt rod visible or hidden?
  • Is the colour a standard one or a custom paint or stain, and does that change the price?
  • Does the price include measuring, installation, removal of old coverings and tax?
  • How long from order to installation, and who do I call if a panel needs adjusting later?
  • Which warranty terms apply to each line, and are any parts covered for a shorter period?

Take the sizes from the quote and enter them in our designer. You’ll have a like-for-like wood price for every window in a few minutes, without anyone coming to the house.

The warranty, side by side

Hunter Douglas’s Lifetime Limited Warranty covers “Defects in materials or workmanship”, with “Motorized components for 5 years from the date of purchase” and operational cords for 7 years[7]. It excludes normal wear, “Fading or discoloration over time”, “Exposure to sun, wind, moisture, or water”, accidental damage, alterations, and improper measurement, installation, cleaning or maintenance, and it doesn’t cover “Shipping charges, or the cost of removal and reinstallation”[7]. Claims start with your original dealer, and Hunter Douglas notes that if you aren’t the original owner, “You may still qualify for free parts”[7]. For Palm Beach, Hunter Douglas adds a promise that the shutters “will not warp, crack, fade, chip, peel, or discolor”[4].

Our warranty terms are stated on your quote. One practical difference: with a dealer, a claim goes through the dealer who installed them; with us, you send photos and we send the part.

Where Hunter Douglas is stronger

  • Someone else does the work. A local expert measures, quotes and installs[6], and if a measurement is wrong, that’s the dealer’s problem, not yours.
  • Choice of material. Hardwood, composite and vinyl from one brand. We make wood only, so for a window inside a shower we’d point you to a vinyl shutter.
  • Motorized shutters today. PowerView on Palm Beach[1]. Ours aren’t on sale yet.
  • Showrooms and samples in hand through dealers, before you buy.

Who should choose which

A quick way to decide
If you…Better fit
want someone to measure and install, and don’t mind waiting for a quoteA dealer brand such as Hunter Douglas
need motorized shutters nowHunter Douglas Palm Beach with PowerView
need a shutter inside a showerA vinyl shutter, such as Palm Beach
want real wood, a price before anyone visits, and can use a drillDIY poplar shutters from us
want to do a few rooms now and the rest later, all matchingEither; with us, each window is priced on its own, so stages add up to the whole

Which material to choose, whichever maker

  • Wood for most rooms: it can be sanded to fit, repainted later, and made in any colour. Wood vs vinyl
  • Composite if you want a factory finish and can live with the maker’s colours; check what’s inside. Composite vs wood
  • Vinyl for a window in a shower, where no wood belongs. Keep it out of skylights, as Hunter Douglas itself advises for Palm Beach[4].

When a shade suits better than any shutter

Hunter Douglas is also known for shades, and some openings are better served by one: a wide sliding door that needs to clear its track, a tall wall of glass, or a window you’d like to motorize today. Our sister company, Shade Boys, makes those to measure: motorized roller shades, cellular shades, zebra blinds and patio door blinds. Many homes use shutters in the bedrooms and street-facing rooms and a shade on the patio door.

If you’d rather have someone measure and install, a dealer brand makes sense. If you’re comfortable with a tape measure and a drill, DIY shutters put that money back in your pocket.

Common questions

How much are Hunter Douglas shutters?

Hunter Douglas doesn’t publish shutter prices. Its Canadian Heritance page says an expert measures and then quotes, and that the price depends on window size, the type of treatment, the material, the control option and any enhancements. Ask a dealer for a written quote per window.

What warranty do Hunter Douglas shutters have?

Hunter Douglas’s Lifetime Limited Warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship, with motorized components covered for 5 years. It excludes things like sun and moisture exposure, alterations and improper installation, plus shipping and removal or reinstallation costs. Claims start with your original dealer.

Heritance or NewStyle: what’s the difference?

Heritance is the wood shutter, “crafted from 100% natural hardwood”. NewStyle is a hybrid that combines “the look of genuine wood with the durability of composite materials”. Both come with 2½, 3½ or 4½ in louvers, according to Hunter Douglas.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Hunter Douglas shutters?

If you’re willing to measure and fit them yourself, a made-to-measure DIY shutter avoids the dealer visit and installation that are part of a dealer price. Ours are solid American poplar and priced online per window before you order.

Where are Hunter Douglas shutters made?

Hunter Douglas doesn’t say on its shutters pages or its Canadian home page, so we won’t guess. Ask your dealer for the factory location of the line you’re quoted.

Is Shutter Boys connected to Hunter Douglas?

No. Hunter Douglas, Heritance, NewStyle and Palm Beach are names belonging to Hunter Douglas. We make our own solid poplar shutters and compare them here using Hunter Douglas’s published information.
