The short answer: blinds are the low-cost, low-commitment choice. Shutters cost more and last: no cords, nothing to wear out, and they open fully. The right one depends on how long you’ll live with it.
| Feature | Wood shutters | Wood blinds | Zebra blinds |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Louvered panels on hinges | Slats on ladders, lifted | Two layers of striped fabric on a roller |
| Clear view | Swing the panels open | Raise the stack | Roll it up |
| Cords | None | Lift cords, unless cordless | Usually a chain or cord, unless motorized or cordless |
| Privacy with light | Tilt the louvers | Tilt the slats | Offset the stripes |
| Cleaning | Wipe or vacuum | Slat by slat | Gentle, fabric |
| Cost | Usually the most | In between | Usually the least |
Light and privacy
All three let you trade light for privacy. Shutters do it with thick louvers that tilt together; wood blinds with thin slats that also tilt; zebra blinds by sliding sheer and solid stripes past each other. The difference is the view: shutter panels swing aside to clear the whole window, while a raised blind still leaves its stack at the top.
None of them is blackout on its own. For a fully dark bedroom, pair any of them with a blackout blind or lined curtain. Bedroom shutters
Cords and children
This is the biggest practical difference for families. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 46 deaths of young children from window covering cords between 2014 and 2019, warns that tying cords high or using “safety cleats” doesn’t prevent it, and advises: “Buy and install cordless window coverings”[1]. Canada’s Corded Window Covering Regulations, in force since May 1, 2021, restrict reachable cord lengths and loops[2].
Shutters have no cords. Blinds can be bought cordless; check before you buy.
Wood blinds vs shutters
Wood blinds and shutters look related, and both are wood, but they work differently. Blinds hang thin slats from ladder strings and pull up into a stack; shutters hold thick louvers in a solid frame on hinges. Blinds are cheaper and can be raised out of the way. Shutters have no strings to tangle or fray, no lift mechanism, and wood shutters can be sanded and repainted later[4].
Zebra blinds vs shutters
Zebra blinds (also called dual or day-night shades) are a common alternative in Canada. They’re slim, inexpensive and roll up out of sight, which suits rental units and condos where you want a quick change. They’re fabric, so they can fade, stretch or fray over time, and most use a chain or cord unless you choose a cordless or motorized version. Shutters cost more and are fixed to the window; they’re the choice when you’re staying. Shutters in condos
Insulation and energy
Window coverings get sold on energy savings more than the evidence supports. A Cornell Cooperative Extension fact sheet put standard venetian blinds at about a 6–7% reduction in heat loss[3]. We’re not aware of a comparable published figure for louvered plantation shutters, so we don’t claim one. Choose shutters for light, privacy and how they look, not for your heating bill.
Cost
Blinds win on price up front. Shutters are the better buy only if you’ll keep them long enough for it to matter. Are shutters worth it? and what ours cost lay out the numbers.
Common questions
Are shutters better than blinds?
For a room you’ll live in for years, usually: no cords, nothing to replace, and they open fully for the view. Blinds cost less up front and suit windows where you want the covering to disappear when raised.
Are zebra blinds better than shutters?
Zebra blinds are cheaper and slim, and they roll up out of sight. Shutters cost more, have no cords, and let you swing the whole panel open. For a long-term home, shutters; for a quick, low-cost update, zebra blinds.
Do shutters or blinds insulate better?
Neither should be bought as insulation. A Cornell fact sheet measured standard venetian blinds at about 6–7% heat-loss reduction; we know of no comparable published figure for louvered shutters, so we don’t make one up.
Are shutters easier to clean than blinds?
Usually. Shutter louvers are thick and fixed in a frame, so a cloth or vacuum brush runs along them without the slats tangling. Fabric shades and zebra blinds need gentler cleaning.
