Updated
The short version: zebra blinds are the low-cost, slim choice, and they motorize easily. California shutters cost more, last longer, give you finer control of light and solid privacy, and have no cords or fabric to wear out. In a home you plan to stay in, shutters usually earn the difference in the rooms you use most.
What a zebra blind is
A zebra blind (also sold as a dual, day-night or sheer shade) is a roller blind with two layers of striped fabric. Ecoline describes “alternating bands of see-through and solid fabric that slide over each other when you adjust them”[1]. Line the solid bands up and the blind is closed; offset them and light comes through the sheer bands; roll it up and the window is clear.
A California shutter is the Canadian name for a plantation shutter: hinged panels of tilting louvers, mounted in or around the window. Ours are solid American poplar, painted or stained. More on the two names

Light and privacy
Both let daylight in while keeping some privacy, but they do it differently. A zebra blind filters light through fabric: with the bands offset you get a soft glow and stripes of view. Shutter louvers redirect light instead: tilt them upward and daylight bounces off the ceiling while someone outside sees nothing but the louver faces.
The difference shows at night. The sheer bands are see-through by design, so with lights on inside and the bands offset, the room can be seen from outside. Zebra blinds close fully only with the solid bands lined up. A closed shutter is wood all the way across.
Neither is a blackout covering. Ecoline says plainly that zebra blinds “won’t give you 100% total blackout” and that room-darkening ones that fit properly “will block 85-95%”[2]. Shutters leak light where louvers meet and around the panels. For a bedroom that must be dark, see how to get a shutter room darker.
Cords, chains and Canada’s rules
Most zebra blinds run on a bead chain or cord, or on a motor. Since May 1, 2021, corded window coverings sold in Canada have had to meet the Corded Window Coverings Regulations[5]. A reachable cord can’t extend past 22 cm when pulled, and a loop can’t be more than 44 cm around[4]. Ecoline’s guide notes that “cordless safety for kids” options are “typically available only through custom orders”[1], and in its price guide a cordless 45 × 45 in zebra blind costs $287.27 against $241.70 corded[3].
Shutters have no cords or chains at all: you move the louvers by hand. For a nursery or a child’s room, that’s one less thing to check. The cord rules in full
Motorization
This is where zebra blinds clearly win. Motors are widely available, and Ecoline prices a motorized 45 × 45 in zebra blind at about $415 to $435, depending on the motor system, and $727.05 with smart-home integration[3]. We don’t sell motorized shutters yet; they’re in development. If you want every window on a schedule or a voice assistant this year, choose a motorized blind.
Lifespan and upkeep
Ecoline calls zebra blinds “super low-maintenance”: “a quick dust or a gentle wipe”[1]. The parts that wear over the years are the fabric and the roller mechanism, and when they go, you replace the blind.
A wood shutter has no fabric and no roller. Louvers are dusted in place, and if you change your colours or the paint gets marked, the wood can be sanded and repainted. That’s our reasoning, not a measured lifespan: no one publishes comparable lifespan figures for either product, so we don’t quote one. Caring for wood shutters
What each costs
Zebra blinds are much cheaper. Ecoline’s published 2026 guide lists custom zebra blinds at $250 to $517 and up, and ready-made ones at $90 to $150[3]. For a 45 × 45 in window it lists $241.70 corded and $287.27 cordless[3].
The same 45 × 45 in window in our poplar, with flat moulding, paint stage 1 and 3½ in louvers, is $540 – $670 CAD; a 36 × 48 in bedroom window is $460 – $570 CAD. Both are before tax and shipping, and well above the price of a blind. What the difference buys is a wood covering with no fabric, roller or cord to replace, made to your exact measurements. Selling your home
Shutters are fastened to the window frame. Whether they, or any blinds, are included in a sale depends on your agreement of purchase and sale, so check it with your agent. We know of no reliable data on what shutters add to a sale price, so we don’t claim a figure.
Choosing, room by room
- Living and family rooms: shutters, if the budget allows. These windows are used all day, and steering light without losing privacy is the point.
- Bedrooms: either, paired with a blackout layer if you need full darkness. For a child’s room, shutters remove cords from the equation.
- Large condo window walls: zebra or roller blinds are often the practical choice for very wide glass, especially motorized. Shutters suit the bedroom windows and smaller openings. Shutters in condos
- Rentals, basements and rooms you rarely use: zebra blinds. Spend where you live.

Common questions
Are zebra blinds cheaper than California shutters?
Yes, by a wide margin. Ecoline’s published 2026 Canadian price guide starts custom zebra blinds at about $250 a window. Our made-to-measure poplar shutters cost considerably more for the same window. What you get for the difference is a wood covering with no fabric or roller to wear out and no cord.
Can zebra blinds give privacy at night?
Lined up solid band over solid band, yes. The sheer bands are see-through by design, so when the room is lit at night and the bands are offset, people outside can see in. Closed shutter louvers are solid wood.
Can you motorize California shutters like zebra blinds?
Motorized zebra blinds are common and relatively cheap. Motorized shutters exist, but we don’t sell them yet: ours are in development. If you want to open and close everything from your phone this year, zebra blinds or roller shades are the practical choice.
Do zebra blinds block all light?
No. Even Ecoline, which sells them, says zebra blinds won’t give you total blackout and that properly fitted room-darkening ones block 85–95% of light. Shutters leak light at louver edges too, so for a fully dark bedroom pair either with a blackout layer.
