The wood

American poplar

Every Shutter Boys shutter is made from premium American poplar, a hardwood, painted or stained.

Every room. In bathrooms and laundry rooms, run the fan so steam doesn’t sit behind closed louvers.

Moulding and paint

Panel with level 1 (flat) moulding

Level 1 (flat)

Square-edged stiles and rails with no routed profile. Clean and simple.

Panel with level 2 moulding

Level 2

Panel with level 3 (moulded) moulding

Level 3 (moulded)

Stiles and rails with a routed, stepped profile that catches the light, like traditional joinery.

Paint finish

Choose paint stage 1, 2 or 3 for any moulding level: they mix and match.

A white shutter panel with a moulded frame and 4½-inch louvers tilted open, held by a tilt rod set near the left stile.
Level 3 moulding, paint stage 3, 4½-inch louvers, front tilt rod set to one side.

Louver size

Wider louvers give a clearer view when open. Narrower ones suit small windows.

How to choose a louver size

Louver widthWhere it suits
2.5 in (64 mm)Small windows and a traditional look. More louvers, so less view when open.
3.5 in (89 mm)The middle ground most windows suit.
4.5 in (114 mm)Large windows and doors. Fewest louvers and the widest view when open, but the window needs more depth.

Tilt

Panel with front rod, middle

Front rod, middle

The classic look. One rod down the centre moves every louver in the section.

Panel with front rod, to one side

Front rod, to one side

Set near the left or right stile, so the middle of the view stays clear and the rod is easy to reach.

Panel with back rod

Back rod

The rod sits on the window side, so from the room you see only the louvers.

Panel with hidden tilt

Hidden tilt

No rod at all. The mechanism is hidden in the side of the panel; move any louver and the rest follow.

Front or back, a rod can sit on the left, in the middle or on the right. Choose it per window in the designer.

Level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 1, 3½-inch louvers, tilting open and closed.

Before you order

Inside mount or outside mount?

Inside mount sits within the window opening and looks built in, but the opening needs enough depth for the louvers to tilt. Outside mount sits on the wall or trim around the window and suits shallow or out-of-square openings.

How many panels will my window need?

It depends on the width. The designer suggests a panel count as you enter sizes, and we confirm the layout with you before anything is made.

What are the shutters made of?

American poplar, a hardwood, for every shutter we make. It takes paint smoothly and can also be stained. In bathrooms and laundry rooms, run the fan so steam doesn’t sit behind closed louvers.
