Bathroom shutters

Privacy without losing the light. Painted poplar is at home in most bathrooms; here’s where it is, and the one window where it isn’t.

Steam is fine. Spray isn’t.

A ventilated bathroom’s humidity rises during a shower and falls afterwards. Painted wood handles that, the same way painted trim and doors do. What wood can’t take is water landing on it again and again: a window inside a shower, or right in the spray from one.

For that one window, vinyl is the better product. Retailers that sell both say the same: The Shutter Store lists vinyl as waterproof and wood as not, and recommends vinyl for bathrooms and other humid rooms (The Shutter Store). We only make wood, so we’ll tell you when to buy someone else’s shutter.

Keeping bathroom shutters in good shape

  • Run the fan during the shower and for a while after.
  • Open the louvers afterwards so air moves behind the panels.
  • Wipe off any condensation that collects on the wood.

Health Canada recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50% (Health Canada); the US EPA says 30 to 60% (EPA).

Questions about bathroom shutters

Can you put wood shutters in a bathroom?

Yes, on a bathroom window that doesn’t get wet. Painted poplar handles steam if the room is ventilated and the louvers are opened after a shower. A window inside a shower or in the spray from it is the one place we say no.

Are there waterproof shutters?

Vinyl (PVC) shutters are waterproof. We don’t make them: if your window is in the shower, buy a vinyl shutter for that window and wood for the rest.

How do I stop bathroom shutters from getting damp?

Run the fan during and after a shower, open the louvers so air can move behind them, and wipe off any condensation that collects on the wood.

What layout works best in a bathroom?

Café shutters cover the lower half for privacy and leave the top open for light, which suits most bathroom windows. Tier-on-tier lets you open the top separately.
