Window shutters in Toronto
The windows in Toronto's homes
By age, 29% of Toronto's homes went up in 1960 or earlier, 29% between 1961 and 1980, 17% between 1981 and 2000 and 24% in 2001 or later.
In Richmond Hill, 16 km away, 15% of homes are built in 1980 or earlier, 43 points fewer than here.

Wide windows split into sections
65% of homes are apartments or condos, where windows are often wide. A wide opening is split into several panels joined by T-posts at the window's own mullions, so the shutter lines up with the glass behind it.
Deep sills and wide casings
29% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.
Measure each side three times
With 58% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, openings that have shifted over the years are common. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at the left, centre and right, then check both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about ¼ in, a mounting frame covers the difference.
How many windows a Toronto home has
The most common home in Toronto is a two-bedroom (29% of homes), and the most common kind is an apartment or condo. No Canadian survey counts windows by type of home; in the US, the middle apartment in a larger building has 3 to 5.
17% of homes have four bedrooms or more and 31% one or none, so most orders sit near the middle of that range. Large homes are less common here than in 96% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. In Richmond Hill, 16 km away, 48% of homes have four bedrooms or more, more than here.
