Window shutters in Halifax
The windows in Halifax's homes
By age, 18% of Halifax's homes went up in 1960 or earlier, 27% between 1961 and 1980, 28% between 1981 and 2000 and 27% in 2001 or later.
In East Hants, 50 km away, the share of built in 1980 or earlier is much the same as here (41%).

Wide windows split into sections
40% of homes are apartments or condos, where windows are often wide. A wide opening is split into several panels joined by T-posts at the window's own mullions, so the shutter lines up with the glass behind it.
Low winter sun through south windows
In December the midday sun is only 22° above the horizon here, so it reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows. Louvers tilted with the room-side edge up send that light toward the ceiling instead of across a screen or a sofa.
Deep sills and wide casings
18% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.
