Homes in Kamloops
Kamloops's 39,910 occupied homes are a mix: 50% detached houses, 28% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 18% semi-detached and row houses.
The biggest building period was 1961 to 1980, which accounts for 40% of homes standing today; 24% are from 2001 or later. Owners live in 70% of homes.
In nearby Vernon, 88 km away, 43% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Kamloops's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Kamloops's homes are older than those in 68% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Semis and row houses
18% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
Replacement windows
40% of homes went up between 1961 and 1980, and most of them have had their original windows replaced since. A replacement window often sits further into or out of the wall than the old one, so the depth you have for an inside mount may differ from window to window in the same house. Measure every opening rather than copying one.
Out-of-square openings
With 51% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 70% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.

Months of hard sun
With 36 days a year above 30 °C, sun on the window is the main thing shutters do here. Closed louvers stop direct sun before it reaches the room; angled up, they still let light bounce off the ceiling. On south and west windows, white and light finishes stay cooler and show fading less than dark stains; keep stains for windows out of the afternoon sun.
