Homes in Penticton
Penticton's 17,360 occupied homes are a mix: 40% detached houses, 41% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 15% semi-detached and row houses.
The 1980s and 1990s built 31% of today's homes, more than any other period we count. 46% are older than that and 24% newer. 63% of homes are lived in by their owners.
In nearby Kelowna, 44 km away, 32% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Penticton's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Penticton's homes are older than those in 57% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Condos and apartments
41% of homes are in buildings of two or more units. Balcony and patio doors suit bypass or bifold panels rather than hinged ones, which need floor space to swing. Check what your condo corporation allows to show from outside before you order: most rules are about the colour seen through the glass.
Out-of-square openings
With 46% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.

Months of hard sun
With 29 days a year above 30 °C, sun on the window is the main thing shutters do here. Closed louvers stop direct sun before it reaches the room; angled up, they still let light bounce off the ceiling. On south and west windows, white and light finishes stay cooler and show fading less than dark stains; keep stains for windows out of the afternoon sun.
