Much of Red Deer is new: 38% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 34% in 1980 or earlier. 65% of homes are lived in by their owners.
In nearby Airdrie, 109 km away, 9% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Red Deer's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Red Deer's homes are newer than those in 67% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Shallow openings
38% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.
Semis and row houses
18% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
A whole house in Red Deer
The most common home in Red Deer has four or more bedrooms: 36% of homes. Large houses are common too: 36% have four bedrooms or more. Homes average 6.4 rooms.
Detached houses are the most common kind of home here. Across Canada, the middle home has 6 to 10 windows (NRCan, 2007). Shuttering that many windows at a typical bedroom-window size comes to roughly $2,700 to $5,700 CAD. For scale, that's about 1.2% of the median home value here, $340,000 CAD (owners’ estimates, 2021).

Price your own windowsOne room at a time
Homes here cost less than in 86% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for, and many owners do a house in stages. Start with the rooms where light and privacy matter most, usually bedrooms and the street-facing front, and keep the same louver size and colour so later rooms match. Your saved design keeps every size.
Pricing a whole house at once
36% of homes here have four bedrooms or more. For a house that size, list every window in one go: type or paste the sizes, or upload them as a spreadsheet saved as CSV, and the designer prices each window and the total.
Young children at home
5.4% of people in Red Deer are under five, more than in 68% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Shutters have no cords or chains at all: the louvers tilt with a rod or by hand, so there's nothing to hang within a child's reach. Canada has limited cord length on corded coverings since May 1, 2021; ours never had any.

Deep cold
January nights average −17.6 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
