Homes in Cochrane
Cochrane has an unusually large share of semi-detached and row houses: 29% of its 12,095 occupied homes, beside 60% detached houses and 11% apartments.
Much of Cochrane is new: 66% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 10% in 1980 or earlier. Owners live in 84% of homes.
Of the 22 Alberta cities we have census figures for, Cochrane has some of the newest homes. In nearby Rocky View County, 28 km away, 24% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Cochrane's windows are on the whole newer. Nationally, Cochrane's homes are newer than those in 98% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Shallow openings
66% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.
Semis and row houses
29% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 84% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.
A whole house in Cochrane
The most common home in Cochrane has three bedrooms: 48% of homes. Large houses are common too: 33% have four bedrooms or more. Homes average 6.9 rooms.
Detached houses are the most common kind of home here. Across Canada, the middle home has 6 to 10 windows (NRCan, 2007). Shuttering that many windows at a typical bedroom-window size comes to roughly $2,700 to $5,700 CAD. For scale, that's about 0.9% of the median home value here, $448,000 CAD (owners’ estimates, 2021).

Price your own windowsYoung children at home
6.7% of people in Cochrane are under five, more than in 95% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Shutters have no cords or chains at all: the louvers tilt with a rod or by hand, so there's nothing to hang within a child's reach. Canada has limited cord length on corded coverings since May 1, 2021; ours never had any.
Working from home
25% of workers here worked from home on census day in May 2021, during the pandemic, more than in 72% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Glare on a screen comes from direct sun and bright sky behind or beside it. Louvers tilted up throw daylight at the ceiling instead, so the room stays bright and the screen stays readable; wider louvers give the clearest view when you open them.
One room at a time
Homes here cost less than in 70% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for, and many owners do a house in stages. Start with the rooms where light and privacy matter most, usually bedrooms and the street-facing front, and keep the same louver size and colour so later rooms match. Your saved design keeps every size.

Cold winters
With 193 days at or below freezing a year, warm room air meets cold glass for months. Shutters closed tight overnight hold that air against the window, so condensation can collect on the sill: tilt the louvers open in the morning, and wipe the sill on windows that often run wet.
