Homes in Beaumont
Beaumont is a city of houses: of its 6,950 occupied homes, 80% are detached, 13% are semi-detached and row houses and 7% are apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes.
Much of Beaumont is new: 66% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 12% in 1980 or earlier. Owners live in 87% of homes.
In nearby Leduc, 13 km away, 27% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Beaumont's windows are on the whole newer. Nationally, Beaumont's homes are newer than those in 96% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Shallow openings
66% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.
Whole-house orders
With 80% of homes detached, most orders here cover a whole house: bedrooms, a patio door, perhaps a bay. Put every window in one list in the designer so the louver size and colour match from the street.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 87% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.

Deep cold
January nights average −18.1 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
