Updated
The short version: Polywood is a synthetic wood substitute, sold and installed by Sunburst Shutters after an in-home consultation. If you want real wood you fit yourself, priced online, that’s us.
What Sunburst says
- Polywood is a “durable and recyclable solid wood substitute”, “completely manufactured in the USA”, with 2.5, 3.5 or 4.5 louvers, seven frames and three whites[1].
- Its hardwood line, Ovation, is “furniture grade basswood”, with 13 paints and 27 stains[2].
- The Polywood warranty covers materials, workmanship, paint finish and installation for the life of the product, for the original customer[3].
- Its locator lists locations in 21 US states, and none in Canada[4].
The energy claim
Sunburst says Polywood is “up to 70% more energy-efficient than traditional wood shutters”[1]. We couldn’t find the test behind it on its pages. For context: the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study of window coverings for the US Department of Energy left louvered shutters out entirely, citing “the current lack of reliable simulation models”[5]. Ask for the test report before you weigh the number. Do shutters save energy?

Common questions
Is Polywood real wood?
No. Sunburst describes Polywood as a “durable and recyclable solid wood substitute”. Its Ovation line is the hardwood one, in basswood.
Are Polywood shutters more energy efficient than wood?
Sunburst claims they are “up to 70% more energy-efficient than traditional wood shutters”. Its pages don’t show the test behind the figure, and the national-lab study of window coverings we cite left louvered shutters out because there was no reliable model for them.
Can I buy Polywood shutters to install myself?
Sunburst sells through an in-home consultation and installs them; we didn’t find a DIY option on its site.
