Kestrel shutters compared: made-to-order wood shutters vs Shutter Boys DIY plantation shutters

A Pennsylvania shop that makes wood shutters and doors to order, and how it compares with made-to-measure DIY plantation shutters.
Condo window wall and balcony door, level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 3.

Updated

The short version: Kestrel Shutters & Doors is a Pennsylvania shop that makes wood shutters and doors to order, inside and out, in a wide range of traditional styles. We make one thing: interior plantation shutters in solid poplar, priced online for each window and fitted by you, in the US and Canada.

Who Kestrel is

Trade directories describe Kestrel as a maker of “interior and exterior shutters and doors, custom sized and made to order”, with “precision milling and joinery”[2]. Fine Homebuilding’s directory quotes it saying its “quality doors and shutters are made from solid wood in our shop”[1]. Another listing says it has been a provider of “interior and exterior wood shutters and doors, folding screens and shutter hardware” since 1989, that it replicates old originals for restoration work, and that each piece “is made to order using true pegged, deep pocket mortise and tenon joinery methods”[3]. The listings give an address in Stowe, Pennsylvania[2].

The styles listed are broad: “Authentic American and European shutter designs, including louvered, panel, board-and-batten, Bahama, special shapes”[2]. That’s a workshop that serves restorers, architects and owners of older houses as much as anyone shopping for window coverings.

A note on sources: Kestrel’s own website couldn’t be read when we checked on October 30, 2026, so everything here about Kestrel comes from the three directory listings linked at the end. They may be older than Kestrel’s current range. Check prices, finishes and terms with Kestrel directly.

Kestrel details from directory listings[1][2][3], read October 30, 2026. Our price is before tax and shipping: flat moulding, paint stage 1, 3½ in louvers.

Where Kestrel is stronger

  • Outside the house. Kestrel makes exterior shutters as well as interior ones[2]. We make interior shutters only.
  • Doors and screens to match. Interior doors and folding screens in the same joinery come from the same shop[3], which matters if you’re restoring a whole room.
  • Period work. It says it can replicate old originals for historic restoration[3]. If you need a shutter that matches a 1900s original exactly, that’s specialist work.
  • Styles beyond louvers. Raised panel, board-and-batten and Bahama shutters are on its list[2]. Ours are all louvered plantation shutters.

Where we’re different

  • A price before you talk to anyone. Every window shows a range in the designer as you add it, in US or Canadian dollars. We didn’t find published prices for Kestrel.
  • Built around the plantation shutter. Movable louvers in three sizes, hidden tilt, divider rails, café and tier-on-tier layouts, and arches, half-rounds, angled tops and circles. Arched and shaped windows
  • Made to be fitted by you. Our guides walk you through measuring and fitting, and we’ll talk you through them by video or phone if you want. How to measure
  • Canada. We ship across Canada except Quebec, priced in Canadian dollars. California shutters
  • One material, chosen for paint. Poplar is a hardwood that takes paint evenly, which is why it’s all we use. Why poplar

Made to order, made to measure: what to ask

“Custom sized” can mean different things. Some makers build a shutter panel to the size you give them, and you supply the frame, hinges and mounting. Others build a complete unit: a frame that fits your window opening, panels hinged to it, louvers that tilt, and the hardware to mount it. Before you compare prices, ask each maker:

  • Is the frame included, and is it made for inside or outside mounting?
  • Are the louvers movable? Fixed louvers look like a shutter but don’t tilt for light and privacy.
  • Are they finished? Unfinished wood costs less up front, but priming and painting louvers by hand is a real job. Ask what finish the warranty assumes.
  • What size do you measure? The opening, the panel, or the frame? Measuring the wrong one is the most common way to get a shutter that doesn’t fit. Our measuring guide says exactly which to measure for inside and outside mounts.
  • Hinges and tilt. Which hinges, which side, and is the tilt rod at the front or hidden?
  • Shipping and packaging, especially for tall panels, and who pays if one arrives damaged.
  • The written warranty, including whether it covers the finish and what voids it.

Interior shutters in an older house

Many people looking at a restoration shop own an older home, and older windows bring their own measuring problems. Openings drift out of square as a house settles, sills are deep and sometimes sloped, and original casing may be thicker or more ornate than anything made today. A shutter built to one width at the top can bind at the bottom of the same opening.

  • Measure three times across and three times down, and give the smallest width and height for an inside mount.
  • Check the diagonals. If they differ by more than a little, an outside mount on the casing can hide the difference better than a frame inside the opening.
  • Look at the sill. A deep or sloped sill can need a frame that sits on it or a sill cap.
  • Mind the paint. In homes built before 1978, sanding or drilling old painted trim can disturb lead paint. Our older homes guide links the official advice.

Those checks apply whoever builds the shutters. Getting them right is what makes a custom shutter worth the price.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Price the same windows the same way. Pick two or three real windows in your house, measure them once, and send the same sizes to each maker. Then check, line by line, that each quote includes the frame, the hinges, the finish, the shipping and the tax. A cheaper quote that leaves out the frame or the paint isn’t cheaper. Our designer shows every window’s range and the total as you go, so you can send a comparable quote to yourself before you contact anyone. What shutters cost

Lead time matters too. A made-to-order shop and a made-to-measure online seller can both take weeks. Ask for the time from order to delivery in writing, and plan your rooms around it.

When a shade suits a window better than a shutter

Shutters are at their best on ordinary windows in bedrooms and living rooms. A wide sliding door, a skylight or a wall of glass is often better with a shade. Our sister company, Shade Boys, makes them to measure: patio door blinds, cellular shades, roman shades, indoor solar shades and motorized roller shades. Shutters in the bedrooms and a shade on the slider is a common mix.

Which to choose

If your project is a historic house, exterior shutters, or doors and screens that need to match period joinery, a specialist workshop like Kestrel is built for it. If you want interior plantation shutters in solid wood for a modern or newer home, priced window by window before you commit, and you’re happy to measure and fit them, that’s what we make. Our shutters are one product: solid American poplar, made to the measurements you take, priced online window by window, and fitted by you. Price your windows

Common questions

Does Kestrel sell interior plantation shutters?

Directory listings say Kestrel makes interior and exterior shutters and doors, custom sized and made to order, in louvered, panel, board-and-batten, Bahama and special-shape designs. Ask Kestrel which of its louvered interior styles has movable louvers, since a plantation shutter is defined by louvers you tilt.

How much are Kestrel shutters?

We couldn’t find prices in the listings we read, and Kestrel’s own site couldn’t be read when we checked. Ask it for a quote with the same sizes you use elsewhere. For comparison, our 36 × 48 in shutter in the basic build is shown on this page, priced from our live list.

What warranty do Kestrel shutters have?

None of the directory listings we read states one. Ask Kestrel for the written warranty before you order, and check whether it depends on how the shutters are finished, since some makers sell unfinished wood.

Is there an alternative to Kestrel shutters?

If you want interior plantation shutters in solid wood, priced online window by window and fitted yourself, Shutter Boys makes them in American poplar for the US and Canada. If you need exterior shutters, period reproductions or matching wood doors, a specialist shop like Kestrel covers work we don’t do.

Where is Kestrel Shutters located?

Directory listings give an address on East Race Street in Stowe, Pennsylvania, and one says it has made shutters and doors since 1989.

Is Shutter Boys connected to Kestrel?

No. They’re separate companies. This page compares the two using directory listings about Kestrel, which are linked below.
