Blinds.ca shutters vs Shutter Boys: composite or solid wood, in Canada

The shutter Blinds.ca sells, what it cost on October 30, 2026, its guarantees, and how a DIY solid poplar shutter compares.

Updated

The short version: Blinds.ca and Shutter Boys both sell made-to-measure shutters online to Canadians, and neither ships to Quebec yet. Blinds.ca’s shutter is composite and priced in its catalogue; ours is solid American poplar, priced window by window in our designer.

Who Blinds.ca is

Blinds.ca is an online window covering store selling in Canadian dollars. Its menus cover faux wood blinds, cellular, roller, solar and sheer shades, vertical blinds, motorized products, and shutters[1]. Its policies page names the operator as Global Custom Commerce, Inc., and says that company “does not manufacture any of the products sold through this site”[3]. In other words, it’s a retailer of other makers’ products, so the warranty you get depends on the brand you buy.

The shutter it sells

On October 30, 2026, Blinds.ca’s plantation shutter category listed one product: the Acadia Living Composite Plus Shutter, “Starting At CAD $315.61”, based on 24 × 36 in, marked “Save 20%” from $394.51[2]. Its louver filters list 2½, 3½ and 4½ in[2].

The category page doesn’t describe the material beyond the product name. Blinds.ca’s page for an earlier Acadia Living composite shutter, now marked discontinued, described it as “a wood-composite material”, in 2½, 3½ and 4½ in louvers, with InvisibleTilt (split hidden tilt on panels taller than 54¾ in), and said inside-mount orders are “made 1/8" smaller than ordered”[4]. Ask whether the Composite Plus shares those details before you order.

Measuring for an inside mount

One detail on Blinds.ca’s earlier composite shutter page is worth knowing whichever site you use: inside-mount orders were “made 1/8" smaller than ordered”[4]. That deduction is the maker’s allowance so the frame fits inside the opening, which means you should give the exact opening size and let the maker take the allowance off, not take it off yourself as well. Take off twice and the frame is loose in the opening. We work the same way: give us the narrowest width and the shortest height of the opening, measured to the nearest ⅛ in, and we make the allowance.

Depth matters too. That page said “Louver clearance depth varies depending upon louver size and shutter frame”[4], which is true of every shutter: a 4½ in louver needs a deeper opening to tilt open than a 2½ in one. Many newer Canadian homes have windows set close to the room side of the wall, so measure from the room side to the glass, and to any crank handle, before you choose a louver size. Buying shutters online in Canada

A few things apply to both of us, and to any online seller you compare. Prices are in Canadian dollars before sales tax, and tax depends on the province you ship to. Quebec is excluded by both of us for now[3]. Shutters are made to order, so neither store can take a correctly made shutter back the way a stock blind can be returned: read what each guarantee covers before you order, not after[3]. And check how the shutter arrives and whether someone needs to be home: large panels travel by freight, and a damaged box is easier to refuse at the door than to claim for later. Blinds.ca asks for damage to be reported within 14 days of delivery[3].

Guarantees and warranty

  • SureFit: “Measured wrong? We’ll remake it - no returns needed”[1]. Read its terms before you order; the policies page links them but doesn’t repeat them[3].
  • 100% Satisfaction Guarantee: contact it within 30 days of delivery and it sends “a replacement of equal value at no additional charge”. “Refunds are not offered under this guarantee.”[3]
  • Damage or a making error: report it within 14 calendar days of delivery[3].
  • Commercial orders (25 or more of the same product, or delivery to a non-residential address) don’t qualify for either guarantee[3].
  • Warranty: provided “directly by the manufacturer”[3]. The Acadia Living shutter warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the shutter, with repair or remake as the remedy. It excludes ordinary wear, high humidity and fading, failure to follow measuring or installation instructions, and shipping and installation labour[5].

Composite or solid wood?

Composite shutters are made to resist moisture, which makes them a fair choice for a bathroom or laundry room. Solid poplar is lighter for the same panel, can be sanded and repainted years from now, and takes a stain, which a painted composite can’t. Our composite vs wood guide sets out what’s inside each and what to ask.

Canadian winters add one more consideration. Cold glass collects condensation, and a shutter closed tight against it overnight keeps the moisture there, whatever it’s made of. Composite shrugs off the damp better; wood copes if the louvers are opened in the morning so air reaches the glass, and if indoor humidity is kept in check. Neither material fixes a window that runs with water every morning: that’s a ventilation question first. Shutters and window condensation

Where Blinds.ca is stronger

  • One store for every covering: shutters alongside blinds and shades, with up to 10 free samples[1].
  • Free shipping across Canada outside Quebec[3].
  • A remake promise for measuring mistakes (SureFit)[1].
  • A moisture-resistant material for humid rooms where wood isn’t the best choice.

Where we differ

  • We make the shutter ourselves, in solid poplar, so there’s one company behind the product and the warranty.
  • Any colour match or a stain, and three moulding levels.
  • Shaped windows: arches, half-rounds, angled tops and circles. Arched and shaped shutters
  • US delivery too, if you have a cottage or family across the border.
  • A design consultation by video or phone, if you want one, before you order.

How to compare the two quotes

  1. Price the same sizes, louver and tilt on both sites, in Canadian dollars.
  2. Check whether a price is a sale price and when the sale ends.
  3. Add HST or GST and PST for your province; neither site’s headline price includes tax. Shutter prices and tax by province
  4. Read who stands behind the warranty: the store, or the maker[3].
  5. Measure carefully either way. How to measure for shutters

When a shade suits a window better

A patio door you walk through all day, or a wide picture window you want clear, is often better with a shade. Our sister company Shade Boys makes patio door shades, zebra blinds, cellular shades and roman shades to measure, so you can keep shutters for the bedrooms and the street side.

Which to choose

If you want a composite shutter in the same order as your blinds, shipped free in Canada, Blinds.ca covers that. If you want solid wood, a stain or custom colour, or a shaped window, that’s what Shutter Boys is for. Our shutters are one product: solid American poplar, made to the measurements you take, priced online window by window, and fitted by you. Price your windows
