Homes in Burlington
Burlington has an unusually large share of semi-detached and row houses: 23% of its 73,180 occupied homes, beside 50% detached houses and 27% apartments.
The biggest building period was 1961 to 1980, which accounts for 33% of homes standing today; 24% are from 2001 or later. Owners live in 75% of homes.
In nearby Oakville, 13 km away, 27% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Burlington's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Burlington's homes are older than those in 60% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Semis and row houses
23% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
Condo towers
18% of homes are in buildings of five storeys or more, where floor-to-ceiling window walls are common. Tier-on-tier panels let you open the top for light and keep the bottom closed for privacy, and a mounting frame gives the panels a square edge on glass that runs wall to wall. Many buildings ask you to book the elevator for deliveries and keep to set work hours, so check with management before install day.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 75% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.
Out-of-square openings
With 47% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.

Summer sun
On the 13 days a year above 30 °C, closed louvers keep direct sun off the glass and out of the room. In a window that takes afternoon sun, white and light paint finishes stay cooler to the touch than dark stains.
Cold winters
With 139 days at or below freezing a year, warm room air meets cold glass for months. Shutters closed tight overnight hold that air against the window, so condensation can collect on the sill: tilt the louvers open in the morning, and wipe the sill on windows that often run wet.
