Homes in Parkland County

Parkland County is a city of houses: of its 11,915 occupied homes, 89% are detached, 1% are semi-detached and row houses and 0% are apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes.

The 1980s and 1990s built 32% of today's homes, more than any other period we count. 37% are older than that and 31% newer. Owners live in 92% of homes.

In nearby Spruce Grove, 38 km away, 20% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Parkland County's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Parkland County's homes are newer than those in 64% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Manufactured homes

10% of homes are mobile or manufactured homes, whose windows usually sit in thin walls with little depth inside the opening. An outside mount on a frame is the reliable choice there, fixed into the framing around the window rather than the thin wall panel.

Why poplar

Whole-house orders

With 89% of homes detached, most orders here cover a whole house: bedrooms, a patio door, perhaps a bay. Put every window in one list in the designer so the louver size and colour match from the street.

Bought to stay

Owners live in 92% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.

Why poplar

Shallow openings

31% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.

Choosing a louver size

A whole house in Parkland County

The most common home in Parkland County has four or more bedrooms: 47% of homes. Large houses are common too: 47% have four bedrooms or more. Homes average 7.6 rooms.

Detached houses are the most common kind of home here. Across Canada, the middle home has 6 to 10 windows (NRCan, 2007). Shuttering that many windows at a typical bedroom-window size comes to roughly $2,700 to $5,700 CAD. For scale, that's about 0.8% of the median home value here, $500,000 CAD (owners’ estimates, 2021).

Homes here are larger than in 90% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for, so a whole-house order runs to more windows than most.

Pricing a whole house at once

47% of homes here have four bedrooms or more. For a house that size, list every window in one go: type or paste the sizes, or upload them as a spreadsheet saved as CSV, and the designer prices each window and the total.

Working from home

21% of workers here worked from home on census day in May 2021, during the pandemic, more than in 59% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Glare on a screen comes from direct sun and bright sky behind or beside it. Louvers tilted up throw daylight at the ceiling instead, so the room stays bright and the screen stays readable; wider louvers give the clearest view when you open them.

Deep cold

January nights average −15.2 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
