Updated
The short version: The Shade Store sells custom shades, blinds and drapery through showrooms and online. Its site, checked October 30, 2026, didn’t list shutters. If you want plantation shutters for some windows and shades for others, you’ll be buying from two places, and that can work well.
What The Shade Store sells
On October 30, 2026, the navigation on The Shade Store’s home page listed[1]:
- Shades: roller, solar, Roman, woven wood, cellular and pleated.
- Blinds: wood, vertical and metal.
- Drapery: custom drapes, hardware, valances and cornices, and pillows.
There was no shutter category, and we found no shutter pages linked from it. That matters if you searched for “The Shade Store shutters”: the closest thing it sells is a wood blind. Its wood blinds are “custom fit to your windows”, with “uniform 2-inch slats”, in American basswood or a faux “foamwood”, from $230 on the day we checked[2].
A wood blind and a shutter do similar jobs in different ways. A blind is a stack of slats on cords or ladders that you raise out of the way; a shutter is a hinged panel of louvers in a fixed frame that swings open. Our shutters vs blinds guide goes through the differences room by room.
How buying from The Shade Store works
Its own pages, on October 30, 2026, describe the service like this:
- Showrooms: “150+ Showrooms Nationwide”, in 26 states and Washington, DC, with no Canadian locations listed[4].
- Measuring: “complimentary” in-home measuring inside its service areas, “$700+” outside them, and free virtual measuring[1].
- Installation: optional, with a $250 minimum trip fee; 10% of the full product price for non-motorized products, and 15% for motorized products and drapery[1][3].
- Swatches: “All swatch orders are free and arrive in 1-3 days”[1].
- Prices online: “from” prices on product pages, for example roller shades from $290, shown at $232 in a 20% off sale ending November 11[3].
- Made in: its roller shades are described as handcrafted in the USA[3].

The Shade Store figures are from its own pages[1][2][3][4], checked October 30, 2026; its “from” prices are for its smallest sizes and vary with sales. Our price is for a shutter, not a blind: poplar, flat moulding, paint stage 1, 3½ in louvers, before tax and shipping.
Where The Shade Store is stronger
- Showrooms. With 150+ locations you can see and touch fabrics and finishes before you order. We don’t have showrooms.
- Someone else measures. Free in-home measuring in its service areas, and virtual measuring elsewhere, takes the measuring off your hands. With us, you measure.
- Shades, blinds and drapery in one order. If every room wants a soft covering, one company and one visit is simpler.
- Free swatches in days, for every fabric it sells.
Where a made-to-measure shutter is different
- It’s a shutter. A hinged panel with louvers that tilt and a frame fixed to the window. It doesn’t hang on cords, and nothing raises or lowers. Cords and child safety
- Solid wood, painted or stained. One material, poplar, in white or any colour or stain you name. Why poplar
- A price before anyone visits. The designer prices every window as you add it, in US or Canadian dollars. Prices for every size
- No installation fee to budget for if you fit them yourself, with a drill and a level. How to install
- Canada. We ship across Canada except Quebec; a 36 × 48 in window is $460 – $570 CAD in Canadian dollars.
Our shutters are one product: solid American poplar, made to the measurements you take, priced online window by window, and fitted by you. Price your windows
Which suits your project
| If you… | Look at |
|---|---|
| want plantation shutters | A shutter maker. The Shade Store didn’t list them. |
| want fabric shades or drapery in most rooms, measured and fitted for you | The Shade Store, or another full-service seller |
| want to see samples in a showroom first | The Shade Store has 150+; we have none |
| are happy to measure and fit, and want solid wood shutters priced online | Shutter Boys |
| live in Canada | Shutter Boys ships there (not Quebec yet); The Shade Store listed no Canadian showrooms |
| want shutters in bedrooms and shades on a wide slider | Mix: shutters for the windows, a shade for the door |
Mixing shutters and shades in one house
Plenty of homes use both. Shutters suit bedrooms and street-facing windows, where you want privacy with the light still coming in, and they read as part of the trim. Shades suit openings that shutters don’t: a sliding door you walk through every day, a very wide window, or a window where you want the glass completely clear when the covering is up.
If that’s your plan, keep the colours related. A white shutter beside a white roller shade looks intended; a stained shutter beside a grey shade can look like two projects. Bring a paint chip or a swatch when you choose either one.
Our sister company, Shade Boys, makes indoor shades to measure: roller shades, zebra blinds, cellular shades, Roman shades and patio door blinds. So you can order shutters and shades from one team even though they’re two products.
Wood blinds or shutters for the same window
If you came looking for shutters and found wood blinds, here’s how the two compare on the same window. This is our own summary of how each product works, not a claim about any one brand’s blinds.
| Feature | Shutter | Wood blind |
|---|---|---|
| Open fully | Panels swing open on hinges; the frame stays | Slats raise into a stack at the top |
| Light and privacy | Tilt the louvers; close them for privacy | Tilt the slats; lower or raise the blind |
| How it’s operated | By hand, with a tilt rod or hidden tilt | Cords, a wand, or cordless lift, depending on the product |
| Depth needed | Louvers swing inside the frame; the opening’s depth decides the louver size | The stack and headrail need room at the top |
| Look | Reads as part of the trim, open or shut | Reads as a covering; the stack shows when raised |
| Cleaning | Wipe louvers in place | Wipe slats in place, or take the blind down |
Shutters usually cost more per window than blinds, and they’re usually kept longer. The honest test is how you use the window: if you open it fully every day, a blind or shade that clears the glass may suit you better; if you mostly tilt for light and close for privacy, a shutter does that with nothing hanging on cords. Are shutters worth it?
How to compare quotes from any seller
Whoever you buy from, these questions make quotes comparable:
- Is the price for the product only, or with measuring and installation? Add every fee, including any trip fee, before comparing totals.
- What exactly is it made of? “Wood” can mean solid hardwood, a wood composite, or a foam or vinyl core with a wood look. Faux wood vs real wood
- Is the price for the sale, and when does the sale end? Compare like with like, on the same day.
- Who measures, and who pays if a size is wrong? A seller who measures usually takes responsibility for its measurements; if you measure, you do.
- What does the warranty cover, for how long, and for whom? Product, finish and installation are often covered for different lengths of time.
- How long from order to installed? Ask for the lead time on your quote, not a general estimate.
If you’re ordering shutters yourself
Measuring is the part people worry about, and it’s five measurements per window: width at three heights, height at three points, and the depth of the opening. The depth decides which louver size tilts freely without hitting the glass or a handle. How to measure and choosing a louver size cover both, and a free design call by video or phone can go through your sizes with you before you order.
