Levolor shutters compared: faux wood traditional, bypass and French door shutters vs DIY poplar

What Levolor’s shutters are made of, where they’re sold, what the listings say about sizes and warranty, and how a solid poplar shutter compares.
Condo window wall and balcony door, level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 3.

Updated

The short version: Levolor’s shutters are faux wood and polyresin, sold made to order through retailers like Blinds.com, Lowe’s and The Home Depot, and you can fit them yourself. Ours are solid poplar, sold by us, and you fit them yourself too. The real choice is between a moisture-tolerant synthetic and real wood.

Who Levolor is, and where its shutters are sold

Levolor is best known for blinds and shades. Its own site didn’t return readable content to us on October 30, 2026, so everything below about Levolor shutters comes from the retailers that sell them, and we name the retailer each time. Three of them list Levolor shutters:

  • Blinds.com: Levolor Traditional Shutters, filed under faux wood shutters[1].
  • Lowe’s: LEVOLOR Bypass Custom Traditional Polyresin Shutters, for sliding openings[2].
  • The Home Depot: Levolor Custom French Door Shutters, through its “Build and Buy” configurator[3].

What the listings say

Traditional Shutters (Blinds.com)

Blinds.com describes them as having “the timeless look of real wood shutters with none of the traditional real wood drawbacks”, with “louvers available in three sizes” and “six frame options”, made to your size from 8 to 180 in wide and 16 to 120 in high[1]. It lists an installation time of 40 to 50 minutes, calls them “easy to install”, and also offers a “Professional Measure & Install” service and its own SureFit remake guarantee[1]. The remake guarantee is Blinds.com’s, not Levolor’s, so it applies when you buy there.

Bypass shutters (Lowe’s)

Lowe’s lists a custom bypass shutter, panels that slide past each other rather than swing, made of polyresin, “a colorfast compound with U.V. stabilizers”, and “backed by a 25-year limited lifetime warranty”[2]. Bypass panels are the usual answer for a sliding patio door, where hinged panels would block the track.

French door shutters (The Home Depot)

The Home Depot listed Levolor Custom French Door Shutters “starting at” $428.65 on October 30, 2026; the final price depends on the configuration you build[3]. It’s a starting price, not a price for a particular size, so it can’t be set against a window price directly.

Faux wood or polyresin against solid poplar

This is the decision that matters, more than the brand. A synthetic shutter shrugs off humidity and doesn’t need repainting; Lowe’s points to the U.V. stabilizers in Levolor’s polyresin[2]. Solid wood is lighter for its size, holds a crisp painted edge, can be sanded and repainted years later, and can be stained. Our guides go through the differences, with sources: faux wood vs real wood and wood vs vinyl.

Which material, by room (our view)
RoomBetter fit
Window inside a shower, or right by oneSynthetic (polyresin, vinyl or composite), or a shade
Ventilated bathroom, window clear of the showerEither; painted wood is fine with a fan
Bedrooms and living roomsEither; wood if you want a stain, a matched paint colour or wide panels
Very wide or tall panelsWood, which weighs less for its size
Rental unit or high-wear roomEither; synthetic if you never want to repaint

Sliding and French doors

Levolor’s range at these retailers includes bypass and French door shutters[2][3]. We make shutters for both too: bypass and bifold panels for sliders, and hinged panels for French doors. Patio and French door shutters and our French door guide cover the measurements that matter.

Where Levolor is stronger

  • Moisture tolerance: a synthetic shutter for a wet room[2].
  • Big retailers, with their own return rules, remake guarantees and, at Blinds.com, a measure and install service[1].
  • A long published warranty on the Lowe’s listing: 25-year limited lifetime[2].

Where we’re different

  • Real wood, in any paint colour or stain, with three moulding levels.
  • Prices per window from the maker: a 36 × 48 in window is $320 – $400 in the US, before tax and shipping, and the same in the designer for your own sizes.
  • Canada. We ship across Canada except Quebec, priced in Canadian dollars ($460 – $570 CAD for the same window). The listings we read don’t mention Canada.
  • One company to deal with, from the design questions to delivery.

Shutters or Levolor blinds?

Most people who search for Levolor know the name from blinds, and a blind is a different product. A faux wood blind is a stack of slats that raises and lowers to clear the window; a shutter is a fixed frame with hinged panels of louvers that tilt for light and privacy and swing open for cleaning or a full view. Blinds cost less; shutters cost more, last longer in daily use, have no cords to lift, and read as part of the room’s trim. If you’re pricing both, compare a shutter with a shutter. Shutters vs blinds

Buying from a retailer or from the maker

Levolor shutters reach you through a retailer, which sets the price, runs the sale, handles the order and owns the return and remake terms[1]. That has advantages: Blinds.com, for example, offers its own remake guarantee and a professional measure and install service[1]. It also means questions about the product, the retailer’s policies and the manufacturer’s warranty can sit with different companies.

Buying from us is one relationship. We make the shutter, we price it, we answer the design and measuring questions, and any problem after delivery comes back to us. Neither model is better for everyone; it’s worth knowing which one you’re in before something needs fixing.

Matching the colour to your trim

White is never just white. A synthetic shutter comes in the colours on the retailer’s list, so hold the swatch against your window trim in daylight before you order; a slightly different white beside painted casing is the thing people notice afterwards. With painted wood, the colour can be matched instead: we use white as standard, or match any paint colour you name, brand, colour and sheen, so the shutters read as part of the trim. Stains are matched the same way.

Measuring for a made-to-order shutter

Whoever makes it, a custom shutter is built to the numbers you send. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height on both sides; use the smallest for an inside mount. Check the depth in front of the glass, because the louvers need room to tilt past any crank or handle. For a sliding door, measure the full opening and the space beside it, since bypass panels stack in front of each other. Our measuring guide walks through the five measurements per window, and the designer flags sizes that look wrong.

How to compare a Levolor quote with ours

  1. Build the same size on both, with the same mount (inside or outside).
  2. Match the louver size and the frame type.
  3. Note the material on each line: faux wood or polyresin against solid poplar.
  4. Check whether a sale price needs a code and when it ends; retailer prices move.
  5. Add tax and shipping, and read the remake and return terms for custom sizes.
  6. Compare the warranty’s terms for the exact product, not the brand in general.

When a shade suits better

Levolor is mainly a blinds and shades brand, and for some openings a shade is simply the better product: a wide slider you open many times a day, a window you want dimmed at night, a skylight. Our sister company Shade Boys makes those to measure for you to fit: roller shades, solar shades, zebra blinds and patio door blinds. Shutters in the bedrooms and shades on the big glass is a common mix.
