California shutters in North Bay
Homes in North Bay
North Bay's 23,470 occupied homes are a mix: 49% detached houses, 33% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 18% semi-detached and row houses.
The biggest building period was 1961 to 1980, which accounts for 40% of homes standing today; 8% are from 2001 or later. 59% of homes are lived in by their owners.
In nearby Huntsville, 112 km away, 45% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so North Bay's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, North Bay's homes are older than those in 93% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Out-of-square openings
With 70% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.
Plaster walls and deep casings
30% of homes date from 1960 or earlier, when walls were plaster on lath and windows sat in deep wood casings. Plaster cracks if you drive screws carelessly: drill a pilot hole, use fixings made for plaster, and fix into the casing or the framing behind it. A deep casing is good news for an inside mount; measure its depth before you choose a louver size.
Semis and row houses
18% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
Replacement windows
40% of homes went up between 1961 and 1980, and most of them have had their original windows replaced since. A replacement window often sits further into or out of the wall than the old one, so the depth you have for an inside mount may differ from window to window in the same house. Measure every opening rather than copying one.

Deep cold
January nights average −17.3 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
