Homes in Delta
Delta's 38,055 occupied homes are a mix: 56% detached houses, 35% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 9% semi-detached and row houses.
The biggest building period was 1961 to 1980, which accounts for 47% of homes standing today; 18% are from 2001 or later. Owners live in 76% of homes.
In nearby Richmond, 12 km away, 26% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Delta's windows are on the whole older. Nationally, Delta's homes are older than those in 72% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Replacement windows
47% of homes went up between 1961 and 1980, and most of them have had their original windows replaced since. A replacement window often sits further into or out of the wall than the old one, so the depth you have for an inside mount may differ from window to window in the same house. Measure every opening rather than copying one.
Out-of-square openings
With 54% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 76% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.
Condos and apartments
35% of homes are in buildings of two or more units. Balcony and patio doors suit bypass or bifold panels rather than hinged ones, which need floor space to swing. Check what your condo corporation allows to show from outside before you order: most rules are about the colour seen through the glass.

Wet months
1,160 mm of precipitation a year keeps the air damp for long stretches. Steam and condensation are hard on any joint, so in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms keep the air moving and wipe water off the sill before it sits.
