California shutters are manufactured of high quality materials like real wooden slats, aluminum clad steel, glass, fiberglass and many other types of products designed to provide homeowners with the most energy efficient solutions available today.
SHUTTERS:
There are different kinds of windows including vinyl replacement, metalclad steel and real wooden shutter options depending on the type of home you live in, style preferences, and climate conditions. Some common window styles include casement windows, dual hung, operable doublehung windows, fixed glazed doors and bay windows.
Most commonly used shutters come in 2 main sizes, custom made or standard sized, which differ according to the width of the opening; however they work just fine regardless. Each size ranges in length from 15 inches to 30 inches. All California shutters will be measured in feet first and then converted into measurements for each inch. For example, 1 foot = 3″ per one foot = 0.3048 square feet of coverage area. A 10′ x 12 ft sliding door would therefore cover approximately 24 sq.ft.
INSTALLATION & REMOVAL:
Installation of California Shutters can cost anywhere from $200-$600+. Depending on the complexity of the job, this price could increase further once labor charges (measuring and cutting lumber, removing old window frames and trimming around windows). Additionally, some California Shutter manufacturers offer warranty protection against hardware failure during installations and removal. However, this insurance often does not apply to damage resulting from faulty design.
After Installation, California Shutters should be tested thoroughly to ensure no leaks occur prior to sealing them in place with caulking. Caulk applied outside must cure properly prior to being sanded smooth. Sanding should only be performed after the frame has fully cured and the caulk has dried. Properly installed California Shutters reduce heat gain/loss while enhancing curb appeal and adding privacy.
REMOVING CALIFORNIA SHUTTS:
Removal costs vary considerably depending upon several factors. Most likely, the homeowner’s experience level influences the decision to either hire professional contractors or handle the project themselves.

When selecting your next home improvement project, it’s always good to ask yourself “Why am I doing this?” In other words, why would someone spend $30k+ on a window treatment? If they’re not answering this question then chances are they’re going to get frustrated and end up making poor decisions. So let’s take a minute to consider some of these questions.
Is this window a focal point of your house? Is it large, small, long, short etc.? Do you like to be able see outside while inside? Does your view provide privacy? Do you care about energy efficiency/cost savings? These are just a few examples but hopefully it helps paint a better picture of your expectations. Once you have those figured out, it will help you narrow down your choices, which should include both vinyl and wooden shutters.

What type of door should I buy/install on my home /office?
In short, most homes should be able to accommodate sliding doors but if you live in high winds areas then double pained wooden doors would work better than solid ones. They provide better weather proofing properties. However the main issue is cost since both types of door costs around $3200 CAD each depending on the size and thickness of glass used in them; the thicker the glass, the less expensive they become because the thicker the material, the easier it becomes to maintain and keep clean. Also consider your location and climate, in colder climates, double glazed steel doors would be preferable while in warmer regions single glazed timber frames would suffice.
How should I measure the windows of my home / office?
For starters, measure every window twice. One measurement without blinds/curtains and another from behind the curtains. You could use chalk sticks, tape measures, yardsticks or string if necessary. If you find something different the first time try again. Measure the height (above sill), width(at sill), length (the distance from inside edge of one jamb to next). When measuring width remember to subtract 1 inch from total area since California requires 2 inches of clearance behind doorframes. Make sure to leave a small gap at top and bottom of frame if applicable. Also note if the door jambs extend beyond the width of the window sash. This can cause issues with caulking.

I am going to use these images for reference purposes only; they are not representative nor should be used to represent actual shutters installed on homes or buildings as they vary greatly depending upon many factors including room dimensions, roof pitch and other similar variables.
I chose products from four different brands. Three of them are custom made while the fourth is generic.

Their shutters come completely assembled out of the box saving homeowners valuable downtime, hassle and expense during construction. And yes, they fit almost every window type.
And finally, I purchased the Generic Wooden Sliding Windows from Sears Canada (which was a great deal). While they are not manufactured under high standards due to manufacturing costs, I still believe the Generic wooden sliding windows would work well for most situations because they are cheap and easy to install. My recommendation however, is to buy custom designed California Shutters instead. Not only are they better options aesthetically but they actually save you money in the long run, especially since you typically spend less on premium products than cheaper ones like Sears Canada sliders.

3: Weatherstripping should be replaced annually in order to maintain optimal levels of insulation. A good DIY project would be removing old weather stripping, cleaning thoroughly and reinserting the replacement material then reinstalling the old strip once you confirm everything fits again correctly. (This will reduce air infiltration). As well keep track of these annual projects and document them along with keeping records of the cost associated in case things need updating down the road.
4: Always consider solar power as a solution instead of just another technology choice. Consider the benefits both energy wise and financially and use this as part of overall building maintenance and upkeep of your home by replacing some common hardware components like light bulbs that could be saving you money while providing environmental benefit. Don’t skimp on quality either but be careful when choosing specific products especially if the product isn’t yet available in Canada. Buy locally whenever possible.
5: Have professional builders involved early on in the construction
of your dream home. Ask those who come highly recommended by trusted friends or family members. Builders can often save you money and provide invaluable insight regarding potential risks to insure against during a pre sale inspection.
