This post is a continuation of my series “What I Like About My New Custom Wood Window Treatments”, which was originally published here on September 26th 2018. If you missed Part 1, please take some time to read through those posts as it will help you understand why this project was chosen for the series, the benefits, and the challenges involved.
So far, I have shown you some great examples of custom shutters made in the USA, but today I wanted to talk specifically about a few different types of California shutters that I feel would be perfect additions to many of these homes, condos, and other buildings. These shutters are available in various styles and materials that are suitable for both residential and commercial projects alike. Some of these shutters include vinyl, aluminum, aluminum composite paneling, fiberglass/polycarbonate composites, and even custom built shutters made of real wood products like Cedar, Redwood, Hickory, Teak, Mahogany, Oak, and Maple. Each style offers unique advantages depending upon the situation, whether it be privacy, security, energy conservation, aesthetics, or simply just adding to the home’s overall character. So without further ado, here we go….
California Shutter Installation Tips & Tricks:
1. Make sure your windows are completely clean prior to installing any type of window covering. If they aren’t already, use window cleaning chemicals to wash them down well first.
2. Always measure twice and cut once! Measure all around each window opening, inside and outside dimensions, then draw your measurements onto masking tape, which helps keep things organized during the window covering install. Cut along the lines you’ve drawn.
3. Use a level while making cuts. When cutting windows, you’ll often find yourself working with uneven or angled surfaces, so having a level handy makes life easier.
4. Be aware of gaps around window frames; this area should remain bare, if possible. Gaps allow air to pass through and reduce heat transfer efficiency.
5. Keep the blind edge against the building’s wall, away from exterior walls. This prevents moisture buildup in walls and reduces condensation and mold growth.

California Shuttter Installation Tip 1: Use Proper Tools & Materials
There’s nothing worse than spending hours trying to figure out the right tools and materials for a project only to find out you used the wrong ones and ruined your entire project because of it.
Luckily, most California shutters manufacturers offer great instructions that walk you through each stage of the installation, which makes it super easy to understand and follow along. But sometimes those manuals aren’t enough — especially when you need a little extra guidance.
To prevent headaches like this, you really need to use the proper tools for the job. For example, when cutting lumber, you absolutely must buy a table saw — a good one. A miter saw isn’t nearly powerful enough to cut lumber straight across, which is necessary for building a custom door frame.
Likewise, you need a power tool to remove old paint from trim (like sandblasters).

In this post I will be talking about the trends and products available today for homeowners who would like to install custom shutters at home. We will talk about the benefits, cost savings and ease of installing these beautiful windows.

California Shutters
There are many types of shutters available on the market but they fall under 3 main categories; Wood, Metal Shutters & Composite. Each type offers unique advantages and disadvantages that should be considered when choosing your window treatment.
Wood Shutters
These shutters typically consist of 1/2 inch thick slats that slide together and lock using wooden pegs or metal brackets. They usually come standard with a decorative trim around them. Most people prefer wood because they provide privacy while still allowing natural light from outside through. They also have very high maintenance costs due to constant exposure to water and weather conditions.
Metal Shutters
This style uses vertical strips of metal instead of slat to form the shutter. They are also called “Venetian Blinds”. They allow sunlight through but block noise and heat. Because the metal does not move they are easier to clean than wood shuttering. However, the metal tends to corrode quickly. They are also expensive to manufacture which leads to higher costs in manufacturing.
Composite Shutters
These are similar to metal shutters except they use glass rather than metal to protect against moisture and insects. They tend to be less expensive to maintain as well as more resistant to damage. Composite shutters are not recommended for areas prone to humidity or condensation however, since the glass does allow some air circulation.
Installing Custom Shutters
Shutters are installed in 2 ways either horizontally across multiple windows or vertically along a single window. Both methods are relatively inexpensive and quick to complete.

There are two general types of California Shutts available today: vinyl and timber shutters. Vinyl shuts come in various sizes and designs, while Timber Shutts offer many custom options. They are also ideal for use along windows that have multiple panes and can provide additional insulation and protection against windblown rain. So I thought I would write something about that as well since I get those kinds of questions regularly. So in case anyone wants to read this article but hasn’t heard my podcast yet, then please check that first. But I’ll be answering these same questions below, just in writing format. And yes, I’m aware that I talk about a lot of things on the podcast so I figured why not put it here too 🙂
First question was: “What does he mean by ‘noise’? Does he just mean noise in general?”
I guess what I meant by noisiness was the fact people tend to just tweet random stuff without really thinking too deeply about whether their message fits into anything meaningful or useful for someone else. Or if it’s actually worth replying back to. So I’d say that’s the main reason behind the term being called ‘Noisy’.

This article was written after many requests for help, and after talking with some customers who had recently purchased shutters through us, I decided to put together this guide, which will provide a little bit of everything for those interested in installing shutters themselves.
I am going to assume that most people reading this article already own a home or condo they would like to improve upon and make better by adding some great, quality California Shutters, but that they don’t necessarily know how to install them properly. If this isn’t true, then please feel free to skip down to Part 2, “What’s New in California Shutter Installation?”
In order to be able to properly evaluate whether or not a specific company should be hired for your job, you must first understand exactly what you’re getting yourself into.
If you’ve ever worked on anything remotely related to construction projects, then chances are good that you’ve heard of “drywall.” Drywall is basically just plasterboard that’s used to cover the walls inside and outside of houses, offices buildings, schools, hospitals, churches, mosques, theaters, museums, casinos, airports, hotels, stadiums… well, you get my point.
Nowadays, drywalls are made with different types of materials, including gypsum board, fiberglass insulation boards, polystyrene foam, paper mache, plaster, concrete blocks, metal studding, plastic sheets, and many other things. Each type and material has different strengths and weaknesses, meaning that the way you install them and use them varies greatly depending on what type you’re working with.
So, in this section we’ll be covering the various materials commonly used in constructing a house (or apartment building), and explaining the differences among each, along with giving tips on choosing the right ones for your project. We’ll begin with the basics, and move onto the advanced stuff later. For example, we won’t go into detail about the different ways to cut plywood, since we’ll discuss that in the next section. So, without further ado, let’s talk about some of the basic materials we’ll be dealing with.

Today, many homeowners opt to install vinyl shutters. However, in years past, wooden shutters have dominated market segments (because the materials & construction cost a bit less). While vinyl shutters provide a better value if purchased in large home improvement stores, they aren’t nearly as attractive aesthetically speaking. The reason lies at least partially in the fact that most manufacturers only offer a single type which tends to be darker than most people prefer. So, if you’re interested in installing shutters for aesthetic purposes, then consider some options like ours — we use high quality wood shingles that will stand the test of time while still providing amazing visual appeal.
To get started, we’ll cover why it’s important to understand the differences among types of shutters…and how each one stacks up against each other once installed properly. When comparing wood versus vinyl shutters, we must take into account multiple factors including the following: Aesthetics; Ease of Installation/Maintenance & Repair; Durability; Value; Cost. Of course, the decision should ultimately come down to personal preference, and if you already own shutters, it shouldn’t impact whether or not you decide to purchase another pair from us. In general, however, wood offers greater durability because it requires no maintenance or repair. While the weather does affect both products equally, wood may suffer damage faster due to splintering and cracking, whereas vinyl usually warps over time. Lastly, vinyl siding costs approximately $25 per linear foot for labor; while lumber generally runs anywhere from $10-$15 per square foot depending on size.
