Homes in Whitehorse
Whitehorse's 11,435 occupied homes are a mix: 48% detached houses, 22% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 20% semi-detached and row houses.
Much of Whitehorse is new: 36% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 38% in 1980 or earlier. 68% of homes are lived in by their owners.
Nationally, Whitehorse's homes are newer than those in 61% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Manufactured homes
10% of homes are mobile or manufactured homes, whose windows usually sit in thin walls with little depth inside the opening. An outside mount on a frame is the reliable choice there, fixed into the framing around the window rather than the thin wall panel.
Semis and row houses
20% of homes share a wall with the next one. Their front windows face the street side by side with the neighbours', so many owners pick a louver size and a white or off-white finish that sit well beside the houses on either side. Bay windows on semis usually need a separate panel set for each face.
Shallow openings
36% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.
A whole house in Whitehorse
The most common home in Whitehorse has three bedrooms: 36% of homes. 23% have four bedrooms or more, and 14% have one or none. Homes average 5.7 rooms.
Detached houses are the most common kind of home here. Across Canada, the middle home has 6 to 10 windows (NRCan, 2007). Shuttering that many windows at a typical bedroom-window size comes to roughly $2,700 to $5,700 CAD. For scale, that's about 0.8% of the median home value here, $500,000 CAD (owners’ estimates, 2021).
Homes here are smaller than in 78% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for: many orders are a few rooms, not a whole house.

5.6% of people in Whitehorse are under five, more than in 76% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Shutters have no cords or chains at all: the louvers tilt with a rod or by hand, so there's nothing to hang within a child's reach. Canada has limited cord length on corded coverings since May 1, 2021; ours never had any.

Deep cold
January nights average −18.9 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
