14% of Alexandria's homes are detached houses, 21% are townhouses, and 65% are apartments or condos. That ranks second for apartment and condo homes among the 16 Virginia cities we cover.
In Alexandria, July averages a high of 89.6°F and January a low of 30.1°F, about 40 days a year reach 90°F, 60 nights fall at or below freezing, and 41.8 inches of precipitation falls in a typical year.
In Arlington, 4 miles away, the share of apartments or condos is much the same as here (66%).

Balcony doors
With 65% of homes in multi-unit buildings, many patio doors here open onto a balcony. Bifold panels fold back in pairs and need little floor space; check what your HOA or building allows to show through the glass.
Older door openings
60% of homes are decades old, and older door openings settle. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom; a mounting frame gives the track a straight line to run on.
Cold glass
A big glass door is the coldest surface in the room on a winter morning, and moisture condenses on it. Open the louvers on cold days so warm air reaches the glass, and wipe off any condensation before it reaches the wood.
