Homes in Saskatoon
Saskatoon's 107,050 occupied homes are a mix: 54% detached houses, 34% apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes and 11% semi-detached and row houses.
Much of Saskatoon is new: 31% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 46% in 1980 or earlier. 65% of homes are lived in by their owners.
Of the 4 Saskatchewan cities we have census figures for, Saskatoon has the newest homes and the highest share of apartments. In nearby Prince Albert, 133 km away, 61% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Saskatoon's windows are on the whole newer. Nationally, Saskatoon's homes are older than those in 58% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Out-of-square openings
With 46% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.
Shallow openings
31% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.

Deep cold
January nights average −20.7 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
Summer sun
On the 11 days a year above 30 °C, closed louvers keep direct sun off the glass and out of the room. In a window that takes afternoon sun, white and light paint finishes stay cooler to the touch than dark stains.
