Homes in Regina
Regina is a city of houses: of its 92,130 occupied homes, 63% are detached, 9% are semi-detached and row houses and 27% are apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes.
The biggest building period was 1961 to 1980, which accounts for 35% of homes standing today; 27% are from 2001 or later. 66% of homes are lived in by their owners.
Of the 4 Saskatchewan cities we have census figures for, Regina has the third-highest share of older homes and the third-highest share of apartments. In nearby Moose Jaw, 67 km away, 74% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Regina's windows are on the whole newer. Nationally, Regina's homes are older than those in 73% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Out-of-square openings
With 54% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, many openings have had decades to settle. Measure each one's width at the top, middle and bottom, and both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about 6 mm, add a mounting frame in the designer, or choose an outside mount so the shutter covers the uneven edges.
Whole-house orders
With 63% of homes detached, most orders here cover a whole house: bedrooms, a patio door, perhaps a bay. Put every window in one list in the designer so the louver size and colour match from the street.

Deep cold
January nights average −20 °C. Closed shutters trap a layer of still air against the glass, which keeps the room warmer, but the glass behind them gets colder too, and frost can form on the inside of older windows. Tilt the louvers open in the morning to let room air reach the glass, and wipe the sill if water collects.
Summer sun
On the 13 days a year above 30 °C, closed louvers keep direct sun off the glass and out of the room. In a window that takes afternoon sun, white and light paint finishes stay cooler to the touch than dark stains.
