Sliding doors to the yard
In a city of mostly detached houses, the patio door is usually a wide sliding glass door. Bypass shutters slide on a track in front of it, so nothing swings into the room and the door opens with the panels stacked to one side.
Older door openings
58% of homes are decades old, and older door openings settle. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom; a mounting frame gives the track a straight line to run on.
Cold glass
A big glass door is the coldest surface in the room on a winter morning, and moisture condenses on it. Open the louvers on cold days so warm air reaches the glass, and wipe off any condensation before it reaches the wood.
