Window shutters in Owen Sound

Deep sills and wide casings

44% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.

Choosing a louver size

Measure each side three times

With 72% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, openings that have shifted over the years are common. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at the left, centre and right, then check both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about ¼ in, a mounting frame covers the difference.

How to measure

Low winter sun through south windows

In December the midday sun is only 22° above the horizon here, so it reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows. Louvers tilted with the room-side edge up send that light toward the ceiling instead of across a screen or a sofa.
