Cranks, handles and shallow frames
In the 42% of homes built in 2001 or later, windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, with crank or lever handles. Measure from the glass, or the handle if it sticks out further, to the face of the trim: that depth decides whether you mount inside, outside or on a frame.
Low winter sun through south windows
In December the midday sun is only 23° above the horizon here, so it reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows. Louvers tilted with the room-side edge up send that light toward the ceiling instead of across a screen or a sofa.
Deep sills and wide casings
16% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.
