Homes in Paradise
Paradise is a city of houses: of its 8,810 occupied homes, 66% are detached, 2% are semi-detached and row houses and 32% are apartments or units in buildings of two or more homes.
Much of Paradise is new: 65% of homes were built 2001 or later, and only 10% in 1980 or earlier. Owners live in 78% of homes.
Of the 4 Newfoundland and Labrador cities we have census figures for, Paradise has the newest homes and the third-highest share of apartments. In nearby Mount Pearl, 6 km away, 45% of homes were built in 1980 or earlier, so Paradise's windows are on the whole newer. Nationally, Paradise's homes are newer than those in 98% of the 167 Canadian cities we have census figures for.

Shallow openings
65% of homes were built in 2001 or later. Newer windows are often set close to the room side of the wall, and handles, cranks and alarm sensors stick out into the space a louver swings through. Measure the depth to the glass and to anything that sticks out; the designer checks it against the louver size you pick.
Bought to stay
Owners live in 78% of homes, and shutters are usually bought to stay with the house. Poplar takes paint well, so they can be repainted years from now if you change a room's colours. Keep your order list: it records every size if you add a room later.
Whole-house orders
With 66% of homes detached, most orders here cover a whole house: bedrooms, a patio door, perhaps a bay. Put every window in one list in the designer so the louver size and colour match from the street.
A whole house in Paradise
The most common home in Paradise has three bedrooms: 46% of homes. Large houses are common too: 31% have four bedrooms or more. Homes average 7.2 rooms.
Detached houses are the most common kind of home here. Across Canada, the middle home has 6 to 10 windows (NRCan, 2007). Shuttering that many windows at a typical bedroom-window size comes to roughly $2,700 to $5,700 CAD. For scale, that's about 1.2% of the median home value here, $348,000 CAD (owners’ estimates, 2021).

Homes here cost less than in 84% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for, and many owners do a house in stages. Start with the rooms where light and privacy matter most, usually bedrooms and the street-facing front, and keep the same louver size and colour so later rooms match. Your saved design keeps every size.
Young children at home
5.4% of people in Paradise are under five, more than in 71% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for. Shutters have no cords or chains at all: the louvers tilt with a rod or by hand, so there's nothing to hang within a child's reach. Canada has limited cord length on corded coverings since May 1, 2021; ours never had any.
Pricing a whole house at once
31% of homes here have four bedrooms or more. For a house that size, list every window in one go: type or paste the sizes, or upload them as a spreadsheet saved as CSV, and the designer prices each window and the total.

Cold winters
With 154 days at or below freezing a year, warm room air meets cold glass for months. Shutters closed tight overnight hold that air against the window, so condensation can collect on the sill: tilt the louvers open in the morning, and wipe the sill on windows that often run wet.
Wet months
1,381 mm of precipitation a year keeps the air damp for long stretches. Steam and condensation are hard on any joint, so in kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms keep the air moving and wipe water off the sill before it sits.
