Afternoon sun
74 days a year reach 90°F. Louvers tilted up block high sun while still letting you see out, which a curtain or vertical blind can't do.
Sliding doors to the yard
In a city of mostly detached houses, the patio door is usually a wide sliding glass door. Bypass shutters slide on a track in front of it, so nothing swings into the room and the door opens with the panels stacked to one side.
Cold glass
A big glass door is the coldest surface in the room on a winter morning, and moisture condenses on it. Open the louvers on cold days so warm air reaches the glass, and wipe off any condensation before it reaches the wood.
