Sun and homes in Surrey

From July to August, Surrey's average highs reach 25 °C or more, and about 11 days a year reach 30 °C. That's more hot days than 56% of the 160 Canadian cities we have climate figures for.

4% of homes date from 1960 or earlier, 43% from 2001 or later, and owners live in 70% of them.

White Rock, 10 km away, has much the same number of days a year at 30 °C or more (11).

Stain in newer homes

In newer homes with painted trim, a stained shutter becomes the one warm, wood-grain piece in the room. A dark stain on flat moulding reads modern; a lighter one on moulded frames, more traditional.

Strong sun and stain

Years of direct sun change any finish, and stain shows it sooner than paint. On west and south windows here, a mid-tone stain ages more evenly than a very dark or very light one; on north-facing windows, any stain works.

Bought to stay

Owners live in 70% of homes here. A stain can be refreshed or painted over in years to come, which a factory-coloured vinyl shutter can't.
