Our society is changing dramatically everyday due to technology advancements like VR, AI, Blockchain, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, Virtual Reality, Robotics, Drone Technology and Artificial Intelligence among other things. While these technological advances provide us with incredible benefits many times people use them inappropriately leading to problems and unintended consequences. For example, virtual reality often creates stress instead of relaxation, robots increase productivity rather than replace humans and artificial intelligence could lead to unemployment. As we go further down this road the next generation will suffer worse than they did during World War II. These technologies must be used responsibly and intelligently otherwise we are headed towards disaster and chaos. We cannot afford to ignore the negative side effects of this innovation which is why I created my first blog post on the topic ‘How To Install A Perfect Wood Cali Shutter For Your New York Apartment or Condominium.’ If you haven’t already read it please take a few moments to check it out because it’ll help you understand my mission and perspective better.
I’ve decided to dedicate another installment of our ‘California Shutters’ series of blogs to discuss the most common questions and concerns of homeowners regarding installing wooden shutters in New York City. So far we’ve covered everything from tips on choosing the perfect color for your home’s exterior, to the importance of adding hardware along the tops of slat ends — but this week we’re tackling the question “What would happen if someone fell?” When discussing fallibility it’s always good practice to address potential dangers — especially those lurking near residential buildings. After all, nobody intends to slip while walking across sidewalks and stoops in the middle of winter yet accidents still occur every day. And since the average person spends only four hours per day outside of work, chances are high that the typical resident could experience a fall event in his or her lifetime — whether indoors or outdoors — unless precautions are taken (1). Since wood shingles are designed primarily for outdoor applications, they typically contain no safety rails which could prevent falls from occurring without falling onto rooftops. Most NYC apartment homes built prior to 1990 had roofs made entirely of asphalt and therefore lacked anything resembling safe guardrails.

California shutters are a great way to enhance curb appeal while protecting privacy and security inside a home as well as offering additional energy efficiency benefits during hot weather months. But what should homeowners consider when selecting the correct California shutters for their homes or condos?
Here are some things to consider before installing California shutters:
What type of installation will I experience? If a homeowner chooses to install their own shutters, they typically must be installed over existing siding or plywood sheathing; this method can result in damaged surfaces like drywall or paint, particularly around windows if the window casings aren’t removed prior to installation. A professional installer can help ensure proper alignment so that your shutters won’t interfere with glass areas, but most people would probably prefer to avoid DIY projects like these whenever possible. When choosing whether to use a contractor or yourself, remember to factor in cost, convenience, and quality. Most contractors offer standard installation and repair options ranging $200-$600+ per job depending on complexity; DIY kits usually run $400+. Another consideration is whether or not your area requires building permits and inspections to comply with regulations. For instance, many regions have strict rules regarding exterior windows and doors, which could affect shuttering project costs due to increased regulatory requirements.
Do I need them? While California shutters are often recommended for high summer heat climates, they’re certainly no panacea against rainstorms or freezing temperatures! Depending upon your climate and location, you’ll either want to purchase shutters for full year protection (and/or winterization), or opt for seasonal protection only — in which case, you should order enough shutters to cover those seasons without worrying about having extra leftovers lying unused. Some brands come equipped with self-closing and latching mechanisms, though this feature isn’t mandatory.
Is my property level protected from wind damage? Windy conditions are always something to watch out for, especially considering coastal communities, mountains, deserts, and other places prone to strong winds. While shutters provide excellent shielding from both sun and moisture exposure, it’s crucial to note that they cannot prevent water intrusion unless specifically designed and tested to withstand hurricane force storm surges.

I started by researching companies locally who could provide the type of service I was seeking but found most either weren’t offering the level of customer support I wanted or just plain old bad quality workmanship. So instead, I decided to try contacting manufacturers that specialize in the higher end of custom window treatments including the likes of West Coast Custom Woodworks, KVH Industries, American Standard Shutters, Suncadia Shutters..etc… After speaking to each company individually, they agreed to send samples via FedEx overnight shipment for me to approve prior to production…which took around 4 weeks. Finally I chose to order 3 different models from West Coast Customwoodwork and received them back about 2 months ago…and guess what….they were terrible!!! No joke these shutters looked awful when installed…even though they seemed perfect during demo/sample period….the paint job looked really cheap and had obvious issues during shipping which made me feel extremely uncomfortable using them…it was almost scary. Not to mention the fact that I live in Virginia Beach and we get tons of hurricanes every year…so if anything gets damaged due to wind damage, I would be completely SOL because I couldn’t replace parts myself without paying ridiculous amounts on the internet. My conclusion? DO NOT USE THESE SHUTTERS!!!! They were literally garbage. But luckily, I have great friends in the industry who recommended Shutterbros to me….and boy did those guys deliver! Within 24 hours I had an installer (who happens to be my brother), a team truck full of supplies, and a beautiful pair of shutters installed…all while I watched from home. And when I say beautifully installed, I mean they actually matched perfectly with both exterior doors (both front and side).

How do I install my exterior doors correctly. My house was built in 1972 and the front storm doors have already split twice while trying to fit a hinge in the center of the frame. All hardware will not match because all were purchased at different times during construction. Help me, I’m desperate. The hinges are attached to the inside side and swing back and forth. Hi Chris! First thanks for asking! Yes, all metal components should go through a good shop to ensure proper alignment and tightness. Next I would recommend ordering a couple extra pieces of stock just to cover yourself in case something does come loose and get stuck behind your existing trim piece. Once those parts arrive you’ll probably find some minor adjustments necessary. Also, if your old storm doors only opened inward then your new ones will most definitely need to open toward the outside. Hope this helps.
