Window shutters in Cape Breton
The windows in Cape Breton's homes
By age, 37% of Cape Breton's homes went up in 1960 or earlier, 30% between 1961 and 1980, 21% between 1981 and 2000 and 11% in 2001 or later.

Deep sills and wide casings
37% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.
Measure each side three times
With 68% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, openings that have shifted over the years are common. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at the left, centre and right, then check both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about ¼ in, a mounting frame covers the difference.
Low winter sun through south windows
In December the midday sun is only 21° above the horizon here, so it reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows. Louvers tilted with the room-side edge up send that light toward the ceiling instead of across a screen or a sofa.
