Louvers for Concord
California shutters and plantation shutters are the same thing: panels of wide, tilting louvers fitted to the window. What sets one apart from another is mostly the louver size, and Concord's homes and sun point to different choices.
Here, about 61 days a year reach 90°F. That's more hot days than 63% of the 881 US cities we have climate figures for.
The midday sun climbs to 78° in June and sinks to 31° in December, so the louver angle that blocks it changes with the season.
In Kannapolis, 6 miles away, the share of apartments or condos is much the same as here (17%).

Tilting against the sun
On hot days, tilt the louvers so the room-side edge points down: high sun bounces off the slats while you still see out below them.
Wide louvers for a view
72% of homes are detached houses with larger windows to the yard. 4½ in louvers mean fewer, wider slats and the most view when they're open, if the opening is deep enough for them to tilt.
When in doubt, 3½ in
The middle size suits most windows and most depths, and it's the one most homes here would choose. The designer checks your depth against the louver you pick.
| Feature | 2½ in | 3½ in | 4½ in |
|---|---|---|---|
| View when open | Least | More | Most |
| Louvers per panel | Most | Fewer | Fewest |
| Depth needed to tilt | Least | More | Most |
| Suits | Small or shallow windows | Most windows | Large, deep windows and doors |
