Cold glass
A big glass door is the coldest surface in the room on a winter morning, and moisture condenses on it. Open the louvers on cold days so warm air reaches the glass, and wipe off any condensation before it reaches the wood.
Sliding doors to the yard
In a city of mostly detached houses, the patio door is usually a wide sliding glass door. Bypass shutters slide on a track in front of it, so nothing swings into the room and the door opens with the panels stacked to one side.
| Feature | Bypass shutters (ours) | Bifold shutters (ours) | Vertical blinds |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it opens | Panels slide on a track | Panels fold back in pairs | Vanes stack to one side |
| Floor space needed | None | A little, for the fold | None |
