Columbus's seasons, indoors
Indoors, the season shapes how you use each room. Columbus's warmest month is July, at an average high of 91.8°F, and its coldest nights come in January, at an average low of 33.3°F.
Highs stay at 80°F or more from May to September: the months when west and south rooms need shade in the afternoon.
Auburn, 37 miles away, has 49 days a year at 90°F or more, fewer than Columbus's 80.

Bedrooms on hot summer evenings
With 80 days a year at 90°F or more, close the louvers on sunny afternoons so the bedroom isn't holding the day's heat at night, then tilt them open for air once the sun is off the glass.
Bathrooms and laundry rooms
In a place with 51.8 inches of precipitation a year, damp rooms stay damp longer. Wood shutters suit a bathroom with a fan, kept out of shower spray; run the fan so steam doesn't sit behind closed louvers.
Living rooms on winter evenings
46 nights a year fall at or below freezing. Closing the shutters after dark puts a layer of still air between the room and the cold glass; open them again in the morning so the window dries out.
| Feature | What matters | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | Darkness, privacy, airflow | Full-height panels, 3½ or 4½ in louvers |
| Living room | View, daylight, glare | Wide louvers, or tier-on-tier on the street side |
| Kitchen | A wipe-clean finish | Painted poplar, café style over the sink |
| Bathroom | Steam and privacy | Painted poplar with a fan, out of shower spray |
