Window shutters in Cranbrook

Shutters made to fit the windows in Cranbrook's homes: how old they are, how to measure them, and whether to mount inside or outside the opening.
Level 1 (flat) moulding, paint stage 1, 3½-inch louvers, tilting open and closed.

The windows in Cranbrook's homes

By age, 17% of Cranbrook's homes went up in 1960 or earlier, 39% between 1961 and 1980, 26% between 1981 and 2000 and 17% in 2001 or later.

Sources: Statistics Canada, 2021 Census of Population; Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canadian Climate Normals 1991–2020. Daylight and sun height: calculated from the city’s latitude.

Low winter sun through south windows

In December the midday sun is only 17° above the horizon here, so it reaches deep into rooms through south-facing windows. Louvers tilted with the room-side edge up send that light toward the ceiling instead of across a screen or a sofa.

Measure each side three times

With 56% of homes built in 1980 or earlier, openings that have shifted over the years are common. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom and the height at the left, centre and right, then check both diagonals. If the diagonals differ by more than about ¼ in, a mounting frame covers the difference.

How to measure

Deep sills and wide casings

17% of homes are older still (in 1960 or earlier), and older walls are often thicker. A deep opening lets an inside-mounted shutter sit flush with the wall and take the widest 4½ in louvers.

Choosing a louver size

How many windows a Cranbrook home has

The most common home in Cranbrook is a four-bedroom (35% of homes), and the most common kind is a detached house. Nationally, the middle Canadian home has 6 to 10 windows.

With 35% of homes at four bedrooms or more, many orders here run past 10 windows once bedrooms, bathrooms and a patio door are counted. Large homes are more common here than in 70% of the 167 Canadian cities we have figures for.
