Louvers for Chilliwack

Plantation shutters and California shutters are the same thing: panels of wide, tilting louvers fitted to the window. What sets one apart from another is mostly the louver size, and Chilliwack's homes and sun point to different choices.

Here, about 11 days a year reach 30 °C. That's more hot days than 56% of the 160 Canadian cities we have climate figures for.

The midday sun climbs to 64° in June and sinks to 17° in December, so the louver angle that blocks it changes with the season.

In Mission, 24 km away, the share of apartments or condos is much the same as here (27%).

Tilting against the sun

On hot days, tilt the louvers so the room-side edge points down: high sun bounces off the slats while you still see out below them.

Wide louvers for a view

54% of homes are detached houses with larger windows to the yard. 4½ in louvers mean fewer, wider slats and the most view when they're open, if the opening is deep enough for them to tilt.

Choosing a louver size

Narrower louvers for smaller windows

In the 25% of homes that are apartments or condos, windows are often narrower or set in shallow frames. 2½ in louvers suit a small window and need the least depth.
