In this edition, I take a look back at some of the great products available from ShutterBoyz today (and yes they changed their branding since 2018), focusing first on patio shutters. Since we introduced the patio window blinds line in March 2019, this section will focus primarily on those products. Then I move onto the other categories. Let’s get started with patio shutters…the category most closely aligned with “California” style decorating.
When I say patio windows, many people immediately picture swinging louvered type shades or the old fashioned roller type designs, but these things rarely work well outside under harsh weather conditions—as opposed to closed panel shutters which provide complete coverage and protection against sun radiation, wind chill, rain, snow in wintertime, sleet/hail pellets during spring and fall storms, hail, debris, birds & squirrels, insects, all while providing privacy without blocking light. We’re talking about real weather protections, baby. In addition

Many home owners will be familiar with vinyl shutters which are available in either plain colored panels or printed designs. They come prehung (the hardware is already attached), ready to install straight away. Many vinyl shutters can only be installed horizontally along windows/doorways. Wood shutters on the other hand usually involve hanging the wooden slats vertically onto rails fixed to your window frame. Then they must be mounted in place manually using screws and nails (there are no prefabricated hardware kits like most vinyl products).
So while both are generally considered traditional materials used for protecting homes against rain and sun damage, both types often work well together. For example wood louvers can easily complement a vinyl design; and vice versa.
Also known as plantation shutters, timber shutters are increasingly popular due to being affordable but still offering high levels of protection for properties as well as providing extra insulation from sunlight and heat loss during cool weather. Timber shutters are made from natural materials including cedarwood, bamboo or redwood. Some manufacturers are adding non toxic paints to reduce staining on white paint surfaces whereas others use environmentally friendly water base stains instead of lacquers.
Which One Is Better?
There are arguments for each side. If you prefer the appearance of a solid color then you’ll appreciate a smooth painted surface. And if privacy is something you desire then choosing a solid color should help keep prying eyes out. On the other hand having different colors in your shuttering could prove attractive. Maybe you would like the choice for decorative purposes rather than simply functional ones. Or perhaps you have chosen this style because there isn’t space for an additional panel above the existing horizontal louvres. These decisions are personal preference though, and what you decide depends on the type and size of windows in your property and whether you live in cooler climates than say Texas or Florida.

Here’s some tips after watching this tutorial
Use professional hardware. Make sure everything goes together tight and solid without having loose pieces around. Install fasteners at 90 degree angles, especially around corners of doors windows and cabinets. When installing shutters, leave at least 3/4 inches space between the bottom edge of the frame and the ceiling or floor surface. Do not cover vents, air condition units, electrical outlets and plumbing fixtures.
Treat every nail hole with care. Use small brush or cotton swab along edges of framing for every inch of framing exposed to outside weathering. Once finished apply sealant along entire base board and door jam area as well as anywhere else water can enter. For example, gaps under sills, behind cabinet covers, along top rails and underneath eaves. Seal these areas twice, once in winter following initial sealing and again in summer prior to reopening them for fall & spring use as well as hurricane season every October.
Apply caulking to all areas. Caulk holes and cracks to prevent moisture from finding entry points. Apply caulk to seams with screws along both sides of trim boards. Once completed you will notice no additional leaks occur. Be sure to always clean up any excess spackle left on surfaces.
Install screens on lower sliders. If desired, screen upper panels first, then use remaining material to attach lower panel.
