We recently completed a research project to help homeowners and contractors understand the home improvement market opportunities around window replacement. While many people focus solely on windows as doors and siding, this report looks beyond just windows to explore other options. We looked at several different markets that could be impacted by the current economic conditions including but not exclusive to energy efficiency, remodel budgets, green homes, weatherization, insulation, and many more to name a few.
There is no doubt that the economy will remain volatile through mid 2020, especially after the COVID spread took hold late last year. However the impact on the industry should be short term as most companies are already operating at reduced staffing levels which allow them to keep costs down. Most industries are currently seeing growth at least 2x higher than normal due to demand generated both internally and externally related to the pandemic. When we take these factors into account along with consumer confidence rebounding quickly in April and May, the outlook for the industry remains positive despite some fluctuations in the near term. Consumers are finally able to rebuild their finances during April and early summer months while they are making larger purchases like appliances, furniture, vehicles, boats and other types of investment products. This increase is helping to offset some of the weakness seen earlier this year.
Homeowners are feeling confident again that the worst recession since World War II was behind them, and spending should pick back up once the restrictions end. Many areas saw sales surge 10% in March, and even though some states had record breaking numbers, those increases weren’t quite enough to put a dent into inventory shortages and rising prices in many regions. Homes sold last week increased 8%, although single family homes fell 14%. Sales of manufactured housing increased 30% nationally in March.
