Wood shutters provide superior quality & style versus vinyl shutters. Most wood shutters use traditional methods like cedar siding nails to install while most vinyl shutters are glued together. We recommend wood shutters because they offer better overall sound blocking properties than vinyl shutters since many wood shingles will absorb noise rather than deflect sounds which causes a lot less annoying rattling on windows. You just won’t be able to differentiate between sounds coming through your window unless someone taps something really loud against the frame of your home or condo building. Of course, it still helps having wood shutters installed around windows but installing them yourself should help save some money.
Installing a door/window trim piece takes 1 hour (including 2 hours to hang). But once everything is installed, you could spend anywhere from 5-8 hours hanging those same pieces depending on various factors such as whether you live in hurricane prone areas, etc.. Depending on the type of door or window you get hung, you can expect to pay $3-$10 per linear foot in install costs.
But remember, door and window trim isn’t always necessary. So you might end up spending a few thousand dollars on doors and windows without the matching trim. If you already own windows and doors, this shouldn’t be all that bad considering one would normally purchase these items separately anyways. But if you are thinking about buying new windows and doors, then I highly suggest going into the project armed with multiple bids and asking questions along the way until you find ones who give good value for you dollar. Be careful though, different contractors often charge similar prices, so keep your eyes peeled for differences in quotes. Once again, make sure you shop around. If you happen to go with someone outside of the industry standard, they may price themselves lower simply selling “off the shelf”, whereas professionals with years of experience usually understand the difference in materials, labor, material suppliers, and other variables involved and therefore typically charge higher rates due to this knowledge gap. Bottom line, ask lots of questions about everything related to the job.
