Most installers suggest removing the glass completely in favor of plastic because then you can easily clean everything including tiles without having glass break in. Additionally, Corian is extremely durable and won’t crack, chip or fade like regular tempered glass which makes cleaning easier. For those who prefer glass showers, I highly recommend choosing Corian and having glass replaced with acrylic sheet instead as acrylic tends to not expand or contract as significantly as traditional glass and thus making cracking less probable. Another benefit of replacing glass with acrylic is no more worrying about breaking shards while scrubbing away dirt and grime, it will just disappear after you rinse.

This week I had some fun installing shutters in my home. We got rid of the old ones after years of use and replaced them with custom order, high quality shutters made to our specifications. These were installed in just four weeks and they really turned my entire house around. I am thrilled to show these pictures to everyone who reads this blog because it was fun seeing all the changes in the space. But first, we have to talk the science behind it. Why are shutters necessary? They keep hot outdoor air out of homes, which helps prevent heat loss during summer months. If you live in Arizona like me then you will notice the difference between having windows versus no windows. When you go inside and take a shower, the warm water feels warmer than outside temperatures. That’s called thermal mass and it happens because there is something keeping that cold or dry air away from us. A window will allow that cool air through while a door won’t. There is another thing called convection and when the temperature increases above 65 degrees F, hot moist dry air rises and moves toward cooler areas. Windows help control this effect with proper design and placement in your home. Convection causes energy losses that can be reduced by adding insulation to doors and walls. This makes sense since the air isn’t moving anywhere but still heats up the area. The most common places people try to insulate themselves are the garage/basement door and exterior wall facing south (the side that gets sun). However, the problem with those spots is moisture and air seepage issues. Moisture condenses onto surfaces causing mold growth and damage to everything near that spot. For example, the moisture dripping down from walls onto furniture creates mildew stains which ruin fabrics, carpets and rugs. And if the humidity goes unchecked the mold spores become airborne and spread quickly throughout the whole building. Another reason why shutters are necessary is for safety. Shutters block sunlight from getting in, especially harmful ultraviolet rays. UV radiation penetrates glass and can cause permanent skin damage in humans, including blindness, cancerous tumors and premature aging. So it’s good to protect yourself against those things. Lastly, shutters offer privacy protection.
