What are the differences between vinyl shutters and wooden shutters? Both offer different benefits—but which should you install? We answer these questions and many other related topics in this report.
Vinyl can be installed quickly and easily, but they tend to fade faster than timber cladding. And since they aren’t made from real wood, they’re prone to splinters and scratches, often requiring repainting after just a few years. Timber’s natural ability to absorb light gives it warmth and character, making it a great choice for homes that receive lots of sun exposure. Wooden shutters come with warranties and maintenance contracts, so you know exactly who will be taking care of them long term—and that makes them a good investment no matter how old the house is.

Before choosing shutters, consider:
• Whether or not the rooms you’ll be putting shutters in get plenty of sunlight. If walls are already painted white, then wooden shutters won’t stand out nearly enough against the background colors—they’d blend almost seamlessly with those color schemes. For darker and less sunny interiors, however, shutters really pop because they reflect bright light back inside, like the windows themselves. I am going to be assuming that people buying shutters for their home are thinking about getting custom designed/made shutters rather than trying to buy them already made up. I see this as being somewhat similar to buying “furniture” versus finding used furniture. People who decide to buy “pre-made” shutters are going to pay less per square foot ($). For example, a 30×60″ sliding door costs about $25-$30k depending on model. A 24′ roll vinyl window would run around $15+/-$5000 depending on size (size varies greatly). We get windows in 60×80, 72×96, and 96 x 110 sizes. It can vary a lot depending on location due to zoning regulations regarding length but overall those prices sound good except that is usually 10X what they really should be costing. So lets say $300ish each or $3000 total, which is still cheaper than paying full price for it. If you had someone install it though, that would probably come around another few thousand bucks.
On average, I priced my own shutters with a customer in April 2020. They only wanted 1 large shutter and 2 medium sized ones, all 40×40 custom ordered. I did the math then figured that was gonna be about 3 days labor @ $150/day. Labor included measuring doors, trimming walls, installing hardware, putting hinges on, painting/priming, testing fit, cutting and sanding/nail finishing shutters, pulling up carpet and padding underneath, cleaning, taking down old curtains, and removing wall paneling. I could go on so many things, but you gotta take everything away with proper prep work first and leave no marks behind. All told, including hardware and tax, we came in under $7000, including some small extras like extra screws, nails, caulk and paint primer. No big deal, all parts come standard in garland texas anyway.
