California Shoppers will spend $7 billion dollars this year on window treatments including custom shutters. But finding a perfect pair of shutters isn’t nearly as straightforward as some would like to believe, especially since many options in today’s market aren’t manufactured specifically for the Cali climate but instead are made overseas and imported.
At the top end of the cost spectrum you’ll find some high priced products manufactured in Asia which often come coated, sealed, or treated with chemicals to protect them against fading, cracking and other weather related damage.
Not surprisingly, these types of closed cell spray coatings on non natural materials cause moisture issues inside homes and lead to premature deterioration of the fabric, eventually causing serious mold problems in both buildings and homeowners’ clothing.
Here’s why I say this because I had my own home built back in 2007. This was long after the California Window Manufacturers Association started making suggestions for better designs of windows and shades and began advocating for “Certified” Certified Products.
Back then they suggested a solution involving building in multiple layers of 3M Scotchgard film between each layer of glass. They recommended putting this material down first and then following with another thin layer of film, or perhaps several more. We got that type of treatment installed.
This worked just fine until 2017 where we received complaints from neighbors who wanted to sell houses in the neighborhood. Apparently the house next door had become notorious and people couldn’t figure out WHY everyone kept selling and moving away because no matter what they painted it, repainted it, fixed what ever small problem came along, or put extra insulation around the outside wall they could still see through the walls of the house next door.
Now if that sounds suspiciously familiar to you that’s because this is basically what has happened with many properties being bought during the real estate bubble years ago. No matter what anyone did to hide this fact, people noticed and soon left leaving behind only unhappy former owners. And guess what happens when something goes WRONG in a house…it gets expensive.

This post will talk about trends regarding motorization that I expect to see develop this year. And by motorization trend, I mean adding some form of computer control, which could be either software or hardware controlled (remote controls). I am seeing many shutters being installed with remote/control capabilities already built into them today.
Remote operation is great because it saves homeowners who live far away, but would rather not drive back home each day just to close their windows. Remote operations allow people to remotely operate blinds, curtains, shades, plantation shutters etc. without having to get within reach of the window treatments themselves.
I believe in coming years, most shutters manufactured today will come standard with some type of remote operation capability like motorization. And since I personally enjoy operating my own shutters manually myself, I anticipate this trend continuing through 2022. However, the more advanced versions of these shutters tend to cost substantially more than regular manual operated units. If you only buy 3-4 models per year, then remote systems aren’t worth it unless they offer some additional feature(s) that makes me willing to pay extra for the convenience. But if you’re buying 50+ different products every single year, then remote system probably does make sense for you.
