California window covers are manufactured using one of four different types of materials – Wood, Aluminum, Vinyl & Steel. Each material serves a specific purpose but none is superior than the rest. However, each material has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, wood windows typically offer excellent thermal insulation properties which helps them conserve energy costs, however they tend to warp, crack and rot easily. Additionally, aluminum windows are extremely durable and long lasting, yet they cannot match the heat retaining qualities of glass; although they come in many styles including casement, patio doors, bay window frames and sliding sash. Lastly, steel windows provide high strength and durability along with great looks, while being able to match the heat retention characteristics of both glass and timber, but have a tendency to be expensive due to their complex manufacturing processes. All things taken into consideration, the decision depends on personal preference and budgets.
VINYL BLINDS VS WOODEN SHUTTER PRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION TIPS:
If you live west coast then chances are your winters can get cold enough for you to feel like living without wood shutters. If you prefer warm climates during winter months the same sentiment applies… if only because you can use your existing wooden shutters in those warmer locations without having to purchase new ones. When deciding weather you need to replace your current wooden shutters with something better suited to your climate, consider installing woodless products first. But I can tell you that in many cases a good quality pair of shutters will only cost around $1500-$2000 dollars including labor whereas most wooden blinds run anywhere from $500+/per pane to nearly $1000+. And those savings adds up really fast especially when factoring in the lifetime costs of replacing damaged hardware after your house remodel project. So for the record, I won’t recommend them unless someone is willing to pay 2x-3X the price point.
When thinking about what type of wood to use (which we show several options below), consider their maintenance requirements as well because certain types take care of themselves better than others. For example, cedar siding actually weathers extremely well once properly protected which makes sense since it was designed specifically for exterior applications back in 1855. However, if a builder installs aluminum clad cedar siding instead then after 20 years it can crack due to thermal shock caused by temperature changes. When choosing materials consider the maintenance and durability aspects rather than trying to cut corners by selecting cheap alternatives simply because you want something quick like vinyl roll down shades.
