In this video I explain why installing exterior shutters in South Florida isn’t practical. I’ve used these materials myself and they simply will not work here because we have no trees. They fall down and get caught in brush like crazy. And since most windows here use 3/4″ plywood instead of 1/2″, you end up having to replace them every 2 years anyways. So why bother if you’ll be replacing them again anyway and it’s just going to break down sooner rather than later? If you live somewhere else though with lots of palm trees and tall buildings then yeah go ahead and install some California Shutters… But for us here in Florida you’re better served sticking with Vinyl Windows and Stucco exteriors. We have hurricanes coming through here. Hurricanes suck ass. You should see my house every single day after a hurricane passes. My wife calls me “the weatherman”. My house becomes a giant billboard for the Weather Channel 24 hours per day during a storm event. She has a whole bunch of pictures saved up on her phone with different angles of my house showing the path of the wind. I’m glad she took those photos but, seriously guys, you really shouldn’t try to put shutters on something with glass panes and palm fronds flying around. Not only would it be ugly, I’d probably lose a finger or arm trying to keep the damn things down while I was working on painting it. Also, the shutters are made out of solid wood so if someone breaks inside they could destroy the entire thing and hurt themselves. We also don’t have many options here locally for proper replacement shutters because most people aren’t interested in spending $30k+ on custom shutters that take months to come back from being cut and installed. For those who are curious, yes I am aware that I said “California Shutters”… But I actually meant Vinyl Panels… Because they’re basically identical products. Both offer similar quality and longevity. Both have good warranties and both do well against tropical storms. But vinyl panels are less expensive and easier to find. Plus they look awesome on homes without trees and high walls. And lastly, I did say we had to stick with Vinyl Paneling…

We will be talking today about vinyl versus wood shutters in the 2020/21 era. We will be focusing primarily on California style shutters but this information applies to all types of shutters. Wooden shutters are great because they offer a natural appearance that many people prefer. They come in various colors and finishes which makes them a great choice for most homes. However, wooden shutters are expensive and maintenance intensive. If your home needs regular cleaning of the exterior, then this would become a problem. Also, the paint used to color these shutters often fades after years of exposure.
Vinyl shutters are inexpensive yet provide a high quality look to the outside of your house. Vinyl shutters are usually made from a plastic material and therefore they do not fade like wood shutters do.
